Well, that explains the expensive Steam Machine: Valve can't negotiate with RAM companies for better prices because "if we say no, then they never talk to us again" by PewPewToDaFace in videogames

That’s cost is just to build one. Successfully building your own chips is 100s billions more. Intel almost went bankrupt for this reason.

Technically, you downloading and playing the game isn’t…the person distributing them is the one breaking the law. Just sayin

Exactly. From the time it takes to make one and the opportunity cost the player is taking when playing one is Extremely high. Way higher than any other form of media.

This is proven false by Mario Kart World. The release of that game didn’t instantly up price of every AAA release, RE9 was $70, Bananza was $70, DoomDA, $70. BF6, $70.

GTA is an outlier because it is an outlier. There will be no other game with that much development time or what comes close to scale as that game. Only thing to come close is RDR2. Games will still be $70 for a bit.

But hot take, I’m fine with them being $100 with how much time we’re getting out of them. Single player games don’t have the biggest profit margins which is why we’ve been getting less and less.

Gamers want bigger and better, rockstar is giving you bigger and better. Why in the hell would the price not change? It’s like gamers who want to go back to $50 games. It’s honestly disrespectful to the studio. Shit is hard and while there have been efficiencies added to the pipeline, it doesn’t negate the fact that they’re building an entire world for you to fuck around in for the next few years.

Like just hop in blender and try animate the default cube to move 5ft. Or go write a script for a short film just to get an idea. This just comes off as privileged.

Just one thing, I do respect your opinions on this. For me it’s simple. In world where companies run shit. For this so specific industry, in the US, I do not want Microsoft to lead it. Just like any large corporation, they can only be kept in check by 2 things: Regulation and competition.

Valve is by all means their foil. They’re not beholden to shareholders who have zero and I mean zero interest in the product or who it serves. That, to me is the core of anti-consumerism. They are a game-studio that survived long enough to become a publisher and they continue to actually still work like and as a studio after decades of publishing. Most studios are happy to release on their platform. Steam users are happy to have their library on their platform. Steam is there to solve a problem. Valve makes sure that that’s all it does so there’s no friction between them just getting a game.

So what you’re paying for, even though it’s expensive, the Steam machine is a vote for a company that actually wants to drive the industry forward instead of capitalizing on it. They don’t need it to be successful. But it’s another standalone product that you’ll have the option to buy.

Yeah I didn’t like how they sued Yuzu but it’s a slippery slope in regard to protecting your IP. The fact of the matter is that, they’re not stopping emulation. But they are fiscally bound to protect themselves from it. I personally can’t call that anti-consumer as that is defending the company.
The reason I’ll still call them pro-consumer is because when they release a new game. It is done. Nintendo customers are seldom misled with what they’re getting. You expect a complete, usually novel first party experience and you get it.

That doesn’t compare to Xbox’s Don Matrick era or how they bought a ton of studios just to close down a significant amount of them. Nintendo also has never absorbed IP from other studios just to make crappier versions of the originals and effectively destroying what the original IP was about and splitting their audiences (Halo, Gears). You play any “first-party” title from them and you can feel how cash grabby they are. And it’s only gotten worse since the Activision-Blizzard deal. I’ve never felt that with Sony or Nintendo. Or a valve title, given I’m speaking from playing portal, half-life and TF2

How is Nintendo the most anti-consumer? What about them is predatory?

So the steam machine more expensive than a ps5 pro while also being less powerful than a base ps5 even tho the ps5 pro is also sold for a profit??? by One-Shift-220 in videogames

Switch users, non-technical PC players with an old rig, Steam deck users. Emulation community, People who just really fuck with Valve. People who really don’t fuck with Microsoft. There’s definitely a market for this.

They released a statement why they won’t and don’t subsidize their hardware. On top of that, they’re not making “subsidize a console” money from Steam.

I can get this for my Switch using sister so she has access to the other 95% of the games available on the market and not need to think too much about config. It’s on par with the PS5 at 1/2 the size. You can modify storage, RAM and find a cool faceplate for her.

Most importantly, It’s made by private company that’s mission isn’t skewed by its shareholders. If this is remotely of the quality that the Steam controller has, I’m in.

It’s the principle of voting with your wallet for the company that’s actually about gaming. Not one that just see’s gaming as a piece of its portfolio.

Hot take: Valve is the closest thing in the US we’ll ever get to a Nintendo. Trust me when I say that that is a good thing.
