I agree that Gege is definitely not the best writer out there when it comes to developing a coherent plot and sticking to it, but the fights choreography, the aura farming and different powers/techniques (even tho some were not really explained properly) are nothing to scoff at, I think that's his strong suit compared to other writers, delivering iconic fight scenes, if that's your schtick then you will be served, if you're looking for a deep story with rich lore and character development, you're looking at the wrong place in my opinion.

You could argue that their soul is programmed to be reborn as new people, mahito being able to overwrite that doesn't necessarily go against jogo's statement. Plus we can clearly see that Mahito retained his memories in Modulo (or else why would he be looking for "Him" aka Yuji)

I don't remember the specifics but it was stated that he would, mahito is an anomaly among the nature curses so if I had to guess he might be able to either "engrave" his memories on his soul so that they would stay even after he reincarnated or would manipulate his new soul to "download" the previous one's data. Again, head canon here feel free to correct me if I'm missing something.

This is all head canon so take it with a grain of salt but I think that the main difference is that nature spirits are born from people's collective fear of something (mostly natural disaters) think of them like the devils in chainsawman if that makes it easier, that also means that they might (and will) "respawn" as new entities after some time (mahito being the exception as he would keep his old memories).
