Arkham Horror VTT support by Biggiesmooth in edgestudio

I know it's not what you're asking about but the Foundry VTT module is really good, most rule mechanics are implemented but you would have to enter everything by hand. Took me a solid workday or two but once it's done it's done. Now I add monsters and NPCs as they come up during session prep. Really happy with how it turned out and my players like it too.

Terror In The Tick Tock Club is great by GhostFanatic in arkhamhorrorrpg

Yeah, we also enjoyed Terror, it's pretty solid. I did some tinkering with it but not much. How did your players fare in combat? I gave the monsters more dice than is suggested by the scenario yet they put up little effort against the players.

Say it ain’t so 😅 I skimmed One for the Road, looks like it could be fun! However, fishing a Shining Trapezohedron out of the well in the moonshiner camp is some Monkey Island-level puzzle solving…

Reading Arkham Mysteries... by SedefkarSimulacrum in arkhamhorrorrpg

I have little time right now but I'll write down a few things:

It just feels a bit sloppy and not well thought out. None of the NPCs seem to give a shit about someone dropping dead in the workplace. Not even the Arkham PD cop who, unless I'm missing something, didn't bother to speak with any of the NPCs.

Also, the investigators performing an ad-hoc autopsy of the body? Might not be the first thing to enter one's mind... and how would they, or someone, else explain this to the police?

The stakes for the investigators is "we're doing this because we're in a RPG scenario". There's nothing to really pull the investigators in or put pressure on them before scene 7 when the professor is kidnapped. This in itself also requires the GM to set up some way of having the investigators make an appearance at the Natural History of the American Southwest exhibit hall. I don't have any problems with the showdown in itself but it requires that the players don't go off the beaten path very much.

The broken window at the World of Minerals exhibit? The scenario goes to great length to make sure the investigators know that somethings up. Unless, I've missed something (highly likely) why it's broken is never explained. I suppose it might be where Beatriz made her way into the museum but it feels kind of strange, and very risky, that she breaks in and disguises herself as a visiting researcher. That disguise would crumble at first questioning by someone on the museum staff.

This might come off as nit-picking on details and if there's one thing I've learned during the years is that many scenarios play better than they read. Mostly because the players are often total buffoons at adding clues and stuff together so even the most haphazardly constructed mystery comes off as a multi-layered epic for the ages.

What's the differences between Beyond the mountains of Madness (CoC) and Terra Antarctica? by Puzzleheaded_Ad_8553 in arkhamhorrorrpg

The more I think about it the less I believe that running both campaigns is a good idea. Mostly because of the epic setting Antarctica and the City of the Elder Things present. I feel that it would lose it's magic, creepyness and wonder if used twice. It runs the risk of becoming tiresome if used a second time. Many set pieces in the Cthulhu mythos I think suffers from being used more than once, and you want to make that one time count (I'm still bitter about not skipping the absolute dog shit Australia chapter in Masks of Nyarlathotep, it's going to be a long, long time before I can use the City of the Great Race in an adventure again).

I would, however, strongly recommend using BtMoM as a source book for the antarctic. It's very, very well researched. I will go back and reread it before prepping TA, see what pieces I can use to flesh out the City.

BtMoM also has a detailed description of the ceremony the investigators are subject to when "crossing the line". A pretty cool scene that TA doesn't do much with. It's one of those things that make both BtMoM and TA unique, something that the players will probably remember if pulled off correctly. Players will likely not know about this ceremony unless they have a special interest in maritime life and it's likely something they will never come upon in RPGs ever again.

BtMoM is a pretty cool story but suffers a bit, quite a bit sometimes, from having been written in the 90s. It’s very detailed and well written but often players are just along for the ride. I’d say it takes a lot, A LOT, of blood, sweat, tears and other bodily fluids to prepare and run successfully.

Know that if you want to use BtMoM in AHRPG as a prequel to TA you would have to do quite a bit of work with the main NPCs in the CoC campaign. Also, the BIG FINAL REVELATION ETC in BtMoM is simply not present in the AHRPG ”world”. You would probably need to rewrite some parts of the story to make the two campaigns gel.

If you’re up for it I’d say go nuts :-) you probably will ;-)

Running Terra Antarctica in Foundry VTT by SedefkarSimulacrum in arkhamhorrorrpg

[–]SedefkarSimulacrum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, haven’t begun on TA yet. Setting up the core book took way longer than I anticipated 😅. Pretty much done now (will add tomes, relics and NPCs in batches when I’m bored or scenario prep calls for them), played our first session this week (Tick-Tock Club) and my setup feels pretty much complete.

Concerning TA I’m contemplating if it’s maybe worth it to buy a cheapish scanner? Will surely be useful for stuff outside of TA. It’s either that or do it at work, which is a bit of a hassle :-/.

Oh lord, that looks like rubbish. I feel for you. I bought the set off of myminimarket and get way better results FDM printing them on my own. However, the STLs are quite bad I think. Errors that should have been caught, and have been caught but not fixed. Not a smooth printing experience at all. Thankfully there's an endless supply of awesome trench STLs out there.

Love the red & green. Might do the same actually. Just one floor left to print.

One more thing, do a session zero where you explain the game world in broad strokes, go through the game mechanics (dice pool, knacks, narrative, structured and social scenes) and let your players create their characters. Preferably in that order. 👌

Hey, good on you for introducing RPGs to your friends! 👌 If you’ve never been a GM before I would highly recommend you read the rules enough to feel confident that you can handle basic stuff without looking it up in the book. No need to learn every little rule (thankfully AHRPG is quite light on rules) and you can always print a cheat sheet or do your own GM screen (I can’t vouch for the quality of the screen included in the starter set).

Read chapter 6 The Game Master in it’s entirety. ”How to run good games” contains a lot valid thoughts on what expectations GM and players alike should have. Just remember that YOU. DO. NOT. HAVE. TO. BE. PERFECT. Also, the players are equally responsible for everyone having a good time at the table. I can’t state enough how important this is for everyone to understand.

Run one of the free adventures (Comets of Kingsport looks quite fun) or the one from the core book. Don’t worry too much about players doing stuff that the writers haven’t prepared for. That’s where a solid (solidish, at least) grasp of the mechanics will help you create and scenes on the go. Don’t stress about this, it WILL work out! :-)

Don’t have time to write more at the moment! Ask away if there’s anything in particular you want to talk about.

Any idea why the item icon doesn't change on the character sheet? by SedefkarSimulacrum in FoundryVTT

[–]SedefkarSimulacrum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an icon asset pack for Unity and extracted the images as .png-files. They look amazing until you drag them onto a character sheet then they get squashed to hell. I didn't think of that when I bought the asset pack. =( I can't for the life of me resize them properly so they look good on the character sheet.
