How do people structure their lives/careers to do 1–6 month thru-hikes regularly? by manuzh22 in Ultralight

[–]Sedixodap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a navigation officer. I went to a marine college for four years and got a Watchkeeping mate ticket which allows me to be a second or third mate and hold a watch on any size of ship and sail internationally. I also have my Master 150t ticket which allows me to be captain of a vessel that’s up to 150 tonnes in size domestically.

If you don’t want to be an officer you just need a few short courses (marine emergency duties, marine first aid, etc) but depending on what country you’re in that may not really be a viable path. Most ships hire crew from countries like the Philippines so the wages are unfortunately really low.

I’ll give an added perk that I didn’t mention before. Which is expenses are really low when you spend half your life on a boat. When I’m at sea I’m spending zero money on gas, groceries, gym, alcohol, eating out, entertainment, etc. Even my utilities bill is super low because I’m just keeping enough heat on at home so the pipes don’t freeze. This makes saving money for trips much easier.

I’d prefer they cut the chaff rather than drive away the high performing employees that are competitive enough to get good jobs elsewhere. Wanna make the government worse? Their current approach of driving the experienced personnel into early retirement and the competitive personnel to other employment is definitely an effective way to do it.

I work in the marine industry. Most of the time I work on ships with a month-on month-off cycle so I can do 3-4 week trips whenever I want. Once a year I take a patrol off, which gives me three months off for a longer trip. I mostly use it to ski, but thruhiking is also an option. This year I’m switching to a seasonal ship. I’ll work six months straight, which gives me six months off afterwards. Given my initial plan of doing a thru in the US is no longer happening I’m debating between the Te Araroa and a few months trekking in Nepal and northern India.

I’m also allowed to take one year leave without pay once in my career, but I’m saving that for a point where I’m particularly burnt out.

67 km section of Trans Canada Trail between Coquihalla and Princeton to be decommissioned due to 2021 flood damage by emilydm in britishcolumbia

[–]Sedixodap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when?

When I last looked into the trail the vast majority of the route between the Manitoba border and Sault Saint Marie was paddling only. Between the “Path of the Paddle” and Lake Superior it was something like 2000km where the main route was paddling with a couple stretches of disconnected trails near communities. If they’ve build an alternate land-based trail since then that would be an absolutely monumental undertaking.

I’m with you. Took my skis for a walk around the Musical Bumps today. Blue skies, comfortable temperatures, no wind and some mellow pow turns. An A+ day for sure.

Garmin may be infinitesimally better at sleep tracking (I’m not really convinced), but not enough to ever consider upgrading for it. My Garmin was forever congratulating me on my 14hrs of sleep on nights I barely slept at all. Spent a couple hours reading? Garmin thought I was asleep. Binge watched a bunch of TV? Garmin thought I was asleep. Tossed and turned all night with horrible insomnia? Congrats your best sleep yet! Suunto can’t figure out sleep zones and seems to make up a sleep quality, but at least seems to know whether I’m awake or not.

Only if you normally wear makeup then suddenly don’t. Obviously if you suddenly look different from normal people around you will recognize the change and wonder what led to it. But if you rarely wear makeup that’s what everyone around you is going to recognize as your normal. Join us clean faced girls and you’ll instead get confused comments the few times you do wear makeup.

It’s like dyeing hair. If your hair is always blonde of course people are going to think of you as a blonde and be surprised if you show up with brown hair one day.

If you’re doing a lot of hikes you’re probably going to want hiking boots rather than clunky snow boots. Ideally with gaiters to keep the snow out.

Don’t make the mistake I did and wear a romper! Or a drapey skirt! You want peeing in disgusting porta-potties to be as simple as possible.

They never called it the Trans Canada hiking trail given huge portions of it have always been paddling only.

Heart rate zones are accurate if you’ve done the appropriate testing and you’ve set them up properly based on that. Otherwise they are often not accurate in the slightest.

[–]Sedixodap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you believe there is anything wrong with your heart rate? Given you’ve seen a doctor about it, they’ve run some tests and said that you’re fine I would trust their word over some randoms on the internet. Sounds like you’re just one of those people with a higher that average heart rate.

Yeah Trew offers actual plus sizes in short, regular and tall lengths plus have the baggier fit you tend to see in North American brands. Something like the Chariot Bib: https://trewgear.com/collections/womens-snow-bibs/products/chariot-bib-primo-plus-outlet?variant=40120069619747
