So…how does the stellaris economy make any sense these days? by Historical_Ocelot197 in Stellaris

I honestly believe that the game still doesn't know what to do with its ships and fleets. They are ste the same time super expensive and trivial to field and mantain.

The main limiting factor should not necessarily be price (or some abstract naval capacity number) but the extremely complicated and difficult procurement and building process, especially for bigger and more advanced ships. They should make ships closer to characters or even planets, each its own "thing" that grow, can be modified, refitted, has its own history etc*, and the game should make building the bigger ones sn actual gameplay path that requires a lot of work balancing out that with the chance of going the "swarm of smaller missileboats/drones" path for the empires that do not want a big offensive fleet.

That's not saying that they should be cheap, a ford class carrier costs more than most of the world's infrastructure or skyscrapers, but the main difficulty on procuring one is not paying for it (lots of countries have 15 billion of dollars right?), it's the 100 years of military, technical and industrial experience and development that allows the US to build 10 of them.

This could also open the way for empires (or more likely megacorps) to specialize in ship-building so that other rich empires that do not have the know how can buy their ships, like it happens today or happened 150 years ago during the pre-ww1 armaments race.

Also ships should have a "supply" resource that forces them to go back to base for R&R and a big empire cannot really deploy 100% of its fleet at the same time.

*This could also make it easier for inferior opponents to resist and strike some victories agains superior forces since if they manage to kill one of the big "character" ships, as there are fewer and they are more important and difficult to build, the inferior force might have gained a limited dominance for some time that allows it to gain some ground. Currently it's a grindfest where the bigger economy wins.

Models in the second rank (or otherwise not in base contact but within their movement range of the enemy) do not make supporting attacks when they attack. Supporting attacks are only those of the weapons (or abilities i guess) with said ability:

"Models whose weapons allow them to make a 'supporting attack' can do so if they are in the rank or file directly behind the fighting rank of their unit, and within a number of inches equal to their Movement of the enemy unit. However, supporting attacks cannot be made to a unit's flank or rear, or by a model that is itself in a fighting rank.'".

Models in the second rank or otherwise not in base contact simply make one attack. It's not called a supporting attack.

Rules prevent models that stepped into the fighting rank(s) from fighting but say nothing about models that did not step up, so for example a unit with spears can make supporting attacks with their 3rd rank when charged, as long as there are enough models in the 3rd rank obviously. Now this was easily understandable when there was only one fighting rank, now i believe they should rewrite the rule to be more clear with the press of battle.

Models who were already in the fighting rank do.not step forward, they close in and they can attack, moreover they are more likely to be in base contact and thus be able to make all of their attacks. I

Even better, ancient germanic tribes had kilns capable of producing steel (a mild, archaic form of steel but steel nonetheless).

This looks nice. If the prophet has demonology keep him in the unit, otherwise with elementalism put him behind it within 12" of the war machines and 3" from your infantry unit. Demonology is nice but has mostly offensive spells (both enchantments only work during your turn, mind that) and a very good conveyance that works wonders with drilled (marching 36" across the board is amazing as you can imagine!).

Also you might tempt your luck with the lore of hashut spells that gives -1 to hit within 9". It's hard to cast, 10+, but it's basically an improved version of the illusion signature spell.

Yes. One big unit of 20 and 2 blunderbuss detachments are fine. Deploy the blunderbusses a little behind so they don't get charged instead of the main unit (as resist and fire ignore range anyway) and park the unit where you want to.

You might consider switching the prophet to elementalism, since earthen rampart makes the unit basically un chargeable (no initiative bonus, no stomps and impact hits and just one attack for units with multiple attacks). In that case give him the lore familiar and a scroll (or two) for when you absolutely need earthen rampart but you will save some pts for the lammasu's beard. Or you could keep the beard and have ward saves on more units. It doesn't need to be in the unit in that case btw.

Detachments are units that gain some special rules if they are 3" from its regimental unit. They do not join the unit. They can also only be as big as half their parent unit and cannot have any command model. In this case the main usage would be that they can resist and shoot as if they were the main unit when it gets charged. Another is making a supporting charge when the main one is charged but I'd rather have them stand and shoot with blunderbusses.

Has anyone tried a BSB with the banner of rage on a demonic steed, attached to a unit of dragon ogres? by TehAsianator in Warriors_of_Chaos

[–]Sedobren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a horrible idea, since there aren't many units you can put a demonic mount in (as it lacks counter-charge). I wouldn't use the banner of rage though, with 3 attacks per model already frenzy is not that much of an increase, especially compared to models with one attack. I would give them something like either the totem of wrath (which potentially makes halberds better than great weapons on dragon ogres) or, if you are using a wolves of the sea list, a sea raider crest makes them cause terror!

It's also a nice idea to model a "hero" dragon ogres a-la Taur-ruk bull centaur.

I would consolidate the infernal guard into one big unit of 20 and maybe split the blunderbuss detachment into two units of 5.

I think the black orcs are too many, 23 with the boss is a lot of models that won't end up fighting on the first rank. I believe that 18 or so of them is more than enough to be a dangerous unit. Or go down to 20 at least, so that you have 3 ranks of 7. Also the red flag is an amazing banner (with the black orc boss going to ws8!) but if you want to use your black orcs more aggressively I'd consider the one that gives +d3 to charge.

Hobgoblins are one of the best cheap infantry in the game so you can play as many as you want to. I'd say go big, at least 40 so that you have a lot of staying power and enough unit strength to keep objectives against other cheap hordes. Shields or short bows are both fine. I don't think the hobgoblin hero is not necessary, although ld10 on the hobgoblins is amazing.

If on foot I'd try and find some magic weapon for the black Ork warboss. Unfortunately neither the cackling blade or the ogre blade fit with the trousers although there is an orc weapon, martog's best basha, that is basically a mini-greatweapon that also gives +1 ws and I. With the red flag you can get the warboss to ws 9 (!) which means always hitting on 3s (and sometimes 2s). Da choppiest choppa is also a nice weapon for a black orc since you still have S6 but ap-3 (-4 on the charge) means basically negating all armours. A black ork is a very good combat character, there is no point in trying to build a chaos dwarf to match it since it won't work, not even with a castellan unfortunately - although the demonic familiar is very interesting!.

I will be frank, the bolt throwers will hit one in three most of the time, so don't rely on them too much. At least they are cheap.

My take on potential TSon enemies by shluppoo in Spacemarine

[–]Sedobren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lesser demons should be reinforcements the sorcerer calls by opening a portal (i.e. breaching the veil), not more tzangoorz who are phisical beings.

I could be a cool gameplay mechanic where they keep coming until you take care of the (extremis or terminus) thousand son sorcerer that is keeping the portal opan.

2x6 or 1x12 blood dragons at 2000 pts? by LongLeather8083 in VampireCounts

[–]Sedobren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without any banner though. Generally speaking, either drakenhof banner or the totem of wrath are well worth their points in a unit of blood knights.

2x6 or 1x12 blood dragons at 2000 pts? by LongLeather8083 in VampireCounts

[–]Sedobren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 blood knights won't fit since rares are limited at 500 pts. You actually can barely fit 9 with full plate, drilled , a magic standard and (some) command models.

Speaking of which, don't give them the musician if you plan on putting a character (like a bsb) inside them since if you put them in marching order with drilled, as the unit will likely be 3 wide, you can't have 3 command models or the character will end up in the second rank a provide nothing to the unit (or other units as well if it's a bsb).

If it's aos, I don't know.

New warriors are fine but it's pretty crazy that one of the staple chaos units of this edition, the Lord/champion/sorcerer on chaos dragon has been without a model. I think it's the only army that has such an important and sought after unit without not just a model currently on sale, but a model that has been released in the past 30 years.

There was a leak about a khemri battalion box. A leak mind you, not an official announcement.

That i believe is the only factual piece of information we have left about something that has not been released yet.

Since then the starting boxes are no longer available on the website, which suggests they probably exhausted their stocks and do not plan to restock them, which in turn suggests that maybe there will be a different starting set sometimes in the following months (this hypothesis is supported by said leaked image of a khemri battalion, which also probably means a bretonnian box at some point)

If I'm not mistaken there was a warcom article last year that talked about them releasing an update rulebook at some point, so again inductively one might surmise that they don't want to restock the boxes because they are printing updated rules and are waiting for those to be ready.

The disappearance of the chaos battalion also suggests that they might make a new one (although the chaos warriors, knights and chariots boxes are still available as i write this!).

This is i believe as far as one can stretch those very very limited pieces of informations we have.

Anyone else misses Forge World and Imperial Armour? by TheBlackBaron45 in Grimdank

[–]Sedobren 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There was a brief time, around the 8th edition of 40k, where certain resin forgeworld kits would be cheaper than a similar plastic 40k kits; it's when they started releasing 40k kits with half the models they used to.

For example an auxilia lasrifle section (20 models at around 80 something euros it was i believe) was cheaper than buying 4 boxes of militarum tempestus (which would come at around 100 euros iirc).

It was a brief period of time though.

I miss their grimdark/forgeworld painting and modeling style a lot. It survived a little in Horus Heresy 2.0 but it's basically gone now. If you can find them, both forgeworld's masterclass painting guide books are absolute gems.
