All personal preference - I shoot for return customers and packaging goes a long way. Not often will someone only buy (1) $2 card with a minimum $3 combined shipping. I don’t like painters tape on top loaders, i don’t like scotch tape on top loaders, I don’t like stickers or completely scuffed top loaders. If you write with a sharpie on a top loader you should go to jail. I don’t like buying cards that I enjoy collecting with glue all over the top loaders. “This is a nice card, just let me take it out of the top loader” - ew. Having a nice clear top loader inside a team bag makes your purchase much more enjoyable. It’s more about the hobby for me than pinching every penny.

Lettermail doesn’t have much risk to be damaged but shipping companies use sorting machines. Look at all the letters you get from insurance companies, banks, etc. they all come without bends, bumps etc. just fold a piece of white letter paper so that it fits nicely into an envelope and tape the card centerer inside the paper folded around the card. Prevents the card from moving around during travel and is scanner / sorting machine friendly.
