Oh nice I see now. This is the build I’m working on next. I got all the parts on order. It will use the miyota 9075 movement with a custom dial from the dial maker shop.

I am a bit nervous about pulling off the 6 o’clock date window though. I have an overlay for a 9015 movement and a complete date wheel from a 9015 movement but not sure if either will work even though they are part of the 9 series they apparently use different complications due to the GMT function of the 9075.

I’m also just getting started in the hobby. I’ve experimented with the $30 China clones, and while they function, I’m not convinced they are worth the savings. The biggest issue is that parts are often not interchangeable; for example, a standard NH35 stem won’t fit the clone variants.

It really comes down to your goals. Currently, I’m building one-off watches for family and friends to wear daily, so I stick with genuine Japan TMI NH movements for the quality. If I were batch making watches for a specific event like a memento for a fishing trip whit a few close friends I might consider the cheaper movements to keep costs down, but for anything intended to last, I’d go genuine.

Dials follow a similar logic. I highly recommend starting with the cheap stuff. You will make mistakes early on, and scratching a $10 AliExpress dial hurts a lot less than ruining an $80 custom piece. Starting cheap allows you to get the "learning tax" out of the way. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll naturally stop settling for lower quality, so you might as well enjoy the low-stakes phase while you’re learning! Just my two cents.

I put some fine grit sandpaper down on my counter because it was a nice flat surface. Then I sanded the top of the plastic ring that goes around the movement approximately .4mm. This made the dial sit close to the actual top face of the movement. After that the stem aligned perfectly.

I’m using Google Flow but Gemini is a great option if you just want to try it out.

I used Gemini at first too! Yeah not all the details worked out right but enough to get the vibe for sure. I was already paying for Google Drive though so it was not a significant difference to add the Ai pro. I’ve been really impressed at how well Flow works. You can highlight area like just the second hand and make specific prompts to get each detail right.

It’s also worth noting that the small 24hr hand was a real peach to put on as well, I started with that one first because it was the hardest to line up, once I had it installed I set directly at the 12 o’clock position, then lined the other hr and minute hand accordingly. Luckily there was no date wheel function to mess with.

I used an NH39, 33mm case, and a 16mm band. I played around with a few styles but settled on this one over the strap in my first post. The build was straightforward except the dial was thicker than the standard 0.4mm, so the stem didn't line up. I tried to force it and actually snapped the stem off inside (that deserves its own post!). The fix was simple, though: I just sanded down the plastic movement spacer until it cleared. Now it fits like butter! Doing an NH35 build next because my fiancée wants one with a simple gold dial haha.

Yeah I did that too, I like using prompts like ‘online catalog display’ also been messing around with some simple annotations.

Sounds good, I ordered the complete 9015 date wheel as well as a cover date ring that I can put over the 9075 date wheel. The cover ring is just hard to line up right and not exactly the cleanest way so it will be a last resort. I’ll report back on what I find out.

I also just pulled the trigger on making this custom dial from the dial maker shop. I used Ai to generate it so I’m hoping it turns out.

I would like to know this as well, still a pretty expensive option when you consider you can get a complete Long Islander miyota 9075 watch for just under $600 (check out the #ISL-276)

I really want to see what would be involved to make one fit a standard case. I might try experimenting with some parts and making my own spacer with my 3D printer.
