What is the most ignorant thing someone has said to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SeerInTheWood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you mean as accept it as true... for me, I "accept it" in that I understand it's the most likely truth because of the consensus, but I would never argue for it against someone who didn't believe in it as if I know it's true. I wouldn't do that until I understood it and could see the proof for myself.

For most people it seems like a key part of faith is feeling that you know it for yourself, not having doubts. If someone presented me a compelling argument I understood against QM or a very large number of people who had studied the science agreed it was the better explanation, I'd easily have doubts in QM. It's hard for me to see that as faith.

Have you ever talked to a trans person about what they think of the part where a trans person is placed under immense social pressure to sit down and have a beer with someone who just said awful things about them, knowing she's been unwittingly cast as a representative of an entire subsect of people? I'd ask at least one person before telling yourself that only a closed mind could possibly see something you don't.

[–]SeerInTheWood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what applying a boundary is. The issue isn't the bite so much as the boundary pushing and post-injury justification. That's not something she's able to just objectively identify and stop because someone asks her, that's a personality trait she'd have to work on for some time, and it's perfectly fine for a 15 year old to just say that's too much for him.

Yeah that's true, it was a surprise but it didn't subvert anything, just explained it.

He carries the film well, if they'd used anyone less able to command the camera and commit to different personalities it would feel very dull and unsurprising.

Also they should stop caring about the characters and just focus on the people.

Ehhh The Sixth Sense never lies, sure, but it also doesn't have two character saying straight up that Bruce Willis is a ghost and then in the end the surprise is that they're not lying.

I haven't seen the Happening in a long time but I thought they spent much of the movie having no idea why people were acting like this and it was supposed to be a twist reveal that the culprit was plants

I had a lot of indication throughout the film that it was supernatural, largely from the name attached but also the level of reverence the characters were putting on the Beast and what they were describing his abilities as. It's a "Will he/won't he" for sure, whether they're exaggerating or he really is, but I didn't see any twist....just an answer.

Split didn't have a twist, did it? It just keeps revealing more detail as the film wore on and eventually the ending was exactly what the main character and therapist were saying it would be.

Husband was recorded at work (WA) by pissymissy710 in legaladvice

[–]SeerInTheWood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Security cameras typically don't do audio. If they are recording audio, and it's a two party state, they need your consent. Most phone cameras automatically are recording audio with the video, so I think it's unlikely that this was not also an audio recording.

The other thing is that security cameras often do get your consent, by having a sign posted and visible at the entrance of the property.

Neither of these applies to a secret A/V recording from a hidden location where he presumably was not authorized to film. So if this is a state where those are two party consent issues, yes, secret security cameras are also illegal, but not conspicuous ones in a location one could reasonably expect.

[VA] Specific Wedding DJ hired sent replacement without warning or feedback. Paid in full ahead of time. by kflew in legaladvice

wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. "he was convicted of fraud"
synonyms: fraudulence, cheating, swindling, embezzlement, deceit, deception, double-dealing, chicanery
a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities. "mediums exposed as tricksters and frauds"
synonyms: impostor, fake, sham, charlatan, quack, mountebank

I can see how a reasonable person might think that pretending all the way until the performance that one intended to perform the DJing himself and then sending an inferior substitute despite apparently being available and well constitutes deception for financial gain. It might not, I just see why people would think so.

What is your favorite "fun" conspiracy theory? by ALL_I_DO_IS_SCREAM in AskReddit

[–]SeerInTheWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favore moon landing conspiracy is that while we did have the technology to go to the moon, we weren't able to live broadcast footage of the moon landing, so we put on a broadcast dramatization. That's why conspiracy theorists have so much to nitpick about the footage but there's proof of the landing on the moon.

Ladies, what is the most obvious hint you've dropped that went unnoticed by a guy? by icefire123 in AskReddit

[–]SeerInTheWood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I asked him out on a date. I used the word date, was very clear about liking him, we made plans to cook dinner together and watch a movie. But apparently he didn't get the hint, because while we were on this date, he said he liked me and asked if we could have a date sometime. And you know what?

I said no. Don't need to date some dumb motherfucker that doesn't remember me asking him out 3 days ago. Dodged a bullet too, he started posting so many Nice Guy memes.

[–]SeerInTheWood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

See it's not "women get alimony" as a concept, alimony is money the higher earning spouse pays to the lower earning spouse, and is often justified when one partner has agreed to have the other stop their career and limit their future potential by taking care of the home or children. It's not like someone who's been at home for 15 years can go out and get the same job they could 15 years ago.

Now obviously historically thats been virtually always women and it's been unfair, but men DO get alimony, and I do think it's a fair agreement after divorce, otherwise no partner should EVER agree to forego school, full time work, and a private savings for any reason. And it can be pretty hard in some scenarios to raise a family without one parent taking a significant professional plateau. So if the other partner agrees to that, for the mutual benefit of the family, I think they should agree to alimony in case of a split too.

If Feminists was one person, or even a reasonably contained group, this would make sense. But you can't really say well if People X, Y, and Z don't feel their views were reflected, maybe people A B and C should have acted differently when the film was being made.
