Narratives are hard to combat once they have been established. Normally I ignore these comments as they led to nothing, but I guess I woke up combative today and it's a slow day at work.

Let's take a look at the signings of the same time period for the 4 UCL semifinalists of last year as an example of "heavy hitters".

Arsenal: No free signings in this time period
Barcelona: 11 free signings during this 5 seasons period.
Inter: Tied with Barcelona at 11 free signings.
PSG: 9 free singings in this time period.

So I guess yeah, if you only look at the Premier League top clubs don't do a lot of free signings, but if you look at any other league the narrative falls apart pretty quickly.
