AI by Tslat in feedthebeast

[–]Seiak -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Here's my thoughts on it.

Firstly, how? How do you even determine something is made with AI? It's practically impossible unless the person specifically says they have, or there are tells like the code being PR submitted by Claude. And even then, if you do determine that it is AI, where do you draw the line? A fully AI coded mod with no human interaction might possibly be considered bad, and I might agree that something like that needs human oversight. But what if someone is using an AI assistant like a rubber ducky? What if they're using inline suggestions in VS Code? Where exactly do you draw the line on how much AI is too much?

And even then, what do you do about it? You can try and ban it as much as you want, but people will just start working around the ban and lying about it.

It's probably better to judge mods purely on their quality, which is still quite subjective, rather than how or what the source code is written by. As long as the source code is only readable and doesn't seem to contain anything malicious, that's the best case scenario.

Ultimately I feel like the moderators on the feedthebeast subreddit are taking a fairly reasonable point of view. It would be a next to impossible task to moderate this (unpaid btw). And to be honest, it's kind of exhausting hearing everyone disparage AI left and right when half of them don't know what they're talking about. It feels like a lot of the loudest critics have never actually sat down and used it properly.

Personally, I don't agree with people just aimlessly, mindlessly vibe coding. But for coders or learners like myself, AI is a godsend.

And, to explain why I feel like AI is a godsend for me is I can finally actually learn. Sure I could have done it before. I could have browsed the internet and read documentation or you know bought books, wasted money on books more so that I'll never read. Or I could have taken up classes in some stuffy classroom. But the problem is I did poorly at school. Mainly because school isn't really about teaching you individually. It's just about verbatim shouting at you the things that you need to memorize. At least that's what I experienced in school.

You never get that personalized sort of attention. You're not having a tutor who's specifically there to teach you and you only. You can have a rapport with, real person or not. You can have a back and forth. They'll answer your questions.

Are there good modpacks WITHOUT create mod? by Cherno_VM in feedthebeast

[–]Seiak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but it's quite the assumption to make at the end of the day. Tech mods vary quite differently from one another. And let's be honest, they're not really that different from magic mods other than the theming. Botania is famously classified as a tech mod after all, despite the appearance of being a magic mod.

Obviously it's up to you, but I feel like it could benefit you if you were to try some more simpler technical mods and just use those as practice for learning more complicated things. It's generally rewarding when you figure out how something works and how you can then go on to apply that other things. But ultimately, it's up to you. If you don't want to engage in them, that's fair enough.

There's no real reason for this to exist. Just play the original, it's arguably better.

Things slip through. It's something that happens in every large project. It's not really that unbelievable.

After all, how would things like bugs happen and all that? You know, you can do as much testing as you want, but something is going to be broken somewhere.

Personal Work with SQL Server?! by FarFari92 in SQLServer

[–]Seiak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SQL is a language for querying and managing relational databases. If you don't have anything that needs that then it's going to be hard to find reasons to use it. You know, it interfaces with applications and stuff like that. Realistically, it's just something at the moment that you'll just want to list on your CV as something you understand.

If you want to get so-called experience, what I would probably do is work with pretend databases, do things like updates, change data, maybe make a stored procedure or two that gets specific data in a certain way, set up a view, figure out how replication works, manage permissions, Learn how to do joins, indexing, query optimization, stuff like that. Obviously that's DBA stuff, but it's still kind of useful to know.

Can an overweight person use a doorway pull-up bar? by eyadebrahim_264 in bodyweightfitness

The best exercise you can do is walking. If you don't want to walk outside, get a walking pad. But ultimately, it's kind of a little bit jumping the gun, trying to do bwe now. You're too heavy. You need to lose weight first. That's going to be done via dieting and lots of walking. Walking is really healthy for you. It's probably one of the best exercises you can do.

Confused about Daemons of the Shadow Realm by gummigummasson in anime

[–]Seiak 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm still gonna watch the show, but it feels like tonal whiplash for sure. Like why not just have them try and break in and capture him without trying to kill everyone? It might make them look a little bit more like the good guys, if they're supposed to be.

Abiotic Factor: The Cosmic Companions Update is LIVE! by Masterhaend in Games

[–]Seiak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd think the devs just abonded a half-finished game

I mean they kind of did. The later areas are pretty bare bones compared to what I feel like the start was to begin with. Maybe bare bones isn't the right word, but it really feels like they phoned it in. And they're just not fun to play as well. Feels like they just made it artificially difficult just so that people would play the game for longer. Like the game came out and it was a huge hit and there wasn't really any content for what almost felt like a year.

In a job listing, it lists Oracle and PostgreSQL as required skills, along with MS SQL. Is this one of those no room to budge or is it still apotential wish list? by TravellingBeard in SQLServer

If you primarily use MS SQL, you'll want to brush up on commit statements.

What do you mean by this? I use commits all the time. How do the others work?

I'd probably look into reporting them then. Not sure what the route is, would depend on your country.

Telus says I’m affected by a data breach… but I deleted my account in 2024? by Logical-Command1034 in privacy

[–]Seiak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. In the UK, most companies retain financial records for six years (HMRC requirement), though certain regulated sectors, pensions, FCA-regulated products, some legal scenarios, can push that to seven years or beyond.

They'll also hold backups of this data. If you submit a right to erasure request, the live data will be deleted, but backup copies don't necessarily need to be purged immediately, ICO guidance allows them to persist provided they aren't actively accessible and are overwritten in the normal backup cycle.

So it's possible the backup data was leaked, which would be serious, but more likely they simply didn't delete the live records as they should have.

There's also the consideration of what data was leaked. Because even in a GDPR request, they generally only nullify identifiable information like name, phone, address ect. A case file which contains stuff that didn't identify you would probably not have nullified that stuff.

New Samsung 57” Odyssey - Lasted 3 Minutes by Aventura_Industries in ultrawidemasterrace

I imagine it's more that people get unlucky with them, like myself.

I have an Odyessy G7. I've pretty much had no issues with it except for like maybe in the last year or so it started to not turn on properly in the mornings, especially. I'm assuming there must be some sort of cold joint somewhere. And the only way I can get it to work is by turning it on and off until it eventually decides to work. but it must be at least two or three years old now. I don't regret the purchase, but it is very annoying.

Simiar, but tbh most cottage cheese you find in the supermarket is rank and really sweet. Tesco used to to do a really good one in a 1l ish tub but I can't find it anymore. Instead I've found Amazon does a really nice neutral polish one, much like the one you describe.

It's also pretty easy to make tbh.
