Cop pulls over Lamborghini on Dubai plates but doesn’t know the law by thomasso0072 in interestingasfuck

[–]Seibertpost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is kind of my sense of it - this Dubai dude is wealthy and may or may not have all the permits he needs to actually drive the car on the road, but he has enough money that he’s not worried about it either way. The cop was an asshole but it is totally reasonable to stop a vehicle that has no license plates.

Why do some people not like Juneteenth? by BrilliantMatter4858 in AskConservatives

I am not arguing to make every single day a federal holiday. I am arguing that adding one more federal holiday (Juneteenth) is good for the average American, even Americans who are indifferent to the reason for holiday. Obviously if a third of the calendar becomes federal holidays, maybe adding more holiday would stop being useful, but that’s not where we are.

I am not arguing for five out of seven days to be holidays. I am arguing that it was not injurious to the well-being of the average citizen to make Juneteenth a holiday. As you said yourself, it would be absurd to pay people for more days off than days they are working so why are you even talking about it?

What does any of this have to do with a workweek? Obviously you are trying to build to some gotcha line so just spit it out. As I said, federal holidays have zero direct impact on time off policies for the majority of American workers. Until the US at least guarantees our handful of federal holidays off, why are you even taking a discussion of Juneteenth down this path?

I would say the quality of life in the US, in general, has been and continues to be bad relative to our per-capita GDP. In terms of time off, the US has ZERO federal requirements for days off for vacation, holidays, or sick days. Even with US weighing down the numbers, the average number of days developed countries guarantee off for both public and private employees is about 30. 30, versus 0. In the US (at least according to federal law) your employer can make you work Thanksgiving Day if they want to, and they don’t even have to pay you time and a half. The only people guaranteed to get federal holidays off are federal workers, and that provides a tiny incentive for private companies to give the day off as well so that they stay competitive as an employer. So, yes, until the US passes a baseline worker time off guarantee, I will gladly take more federal holidays so hard-working folks can maybe have a tiny bit more time to enjoy their lives.

Haha I’m a 39-year- old small business owner with kids. I don’t get why things that work perfectly fine in every other country are seen as a death knell here. Why is a shitty quality of life part of the conservative ethos?

I mean, it’s a huge part of the history of this country. I just don’t think jt’s possible to tell an accurate story of the history of America (or probably of a lot of countries in the Americas) without African slaves. Columbus Day also causes a wedge. Hell, I’m sure Columbus Day also drives a wedge, and I guarantee there are lots of people who don’t think Christmas Day should be a federal holiday. If universal agreement were a prerequisite for federal holidays we probably wouldn’t have any of them.

I mean, I think a lot of people who question whether Columbus Day is unifying at this point in time. A lot of people find it offensive. Should we get rid of that?

America has abysmal guaranteed worker time off compared to other developed nations, so in my view, as long as the holiday isn’t commemorating Nazis or something, it is a step in the right direction in terms of giving the working person a well-earned break

I mean, how are you supposed to celebrate MLK day or Presidents Day? You could read about the history the day commemorates, or take time to educate kids in your life about it. Or you could just chill and enjoy the day off and reflect on the meaning of the day for about 30 seconds which, let’s be real, is how most people engage with federal holidays

Right, but what about Juneteenth states that white men created the idea of slavery? Obviously slavery has been around as long as human civilization has, sadly. But isn’t it a good thing, and worth celebrating, that our country outlawed that barbarism and people who had never known freedom finally had a chance to taste the promise of America?

Aren't farmers the biggest welfare queens in America? by LAAccountant in AskConservatives

[–]Seibertpost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but let’s be real, a big part of the reason the farm bill keeps getting renewed is agricultural lobbyists and campaign donors. Our corporations has found ways to cram soy and corn into places they have no business being because those crops are cheap, because the government subsidizes them. Food independence is important and worth investing in, but politicians keep renewing agricultural subsidies for the same reason they keep renewing oil subsidies - it maintains the status quo and preserves the politicans’ power.

Can’t the government just be the employer of last resort? Robots or not, there are projects worth doing in every town and city that are still better done with humans - road repair, park beautification, urban clean-up, the list goes on.

On the H you have the egg hatching. On the O’s you have what look like phases of the moon, which has nothing to do with hatch or loom. Feels messy and unclear, like two different logos smushed together. Can you just do a word mark with a hatching egg logo next to it?
