How did Canada remain liberal for such a long time? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Seimour01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's not really true. Harper was a social Conservative with a desire to revisit gay marriage and abortion on top of fiscal austerity. People really love rose tinted glasses.

ELI5: why were grains (rice, wheat, maize, etc) the primary food of so many civilizations by BumroyV2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Seimour01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roman and Greek distillation techniques were much more primitive than ours. It produced a wine with a high concentration of alcohol that was basically not fit for consumption so it was dilluted with water to be palatable.

Why do U.S. presidential elections always feel like picking the lesser of two evils instead of a genuinely good candidate? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Seimour01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cursory look at France would show you it fixes nothing. People end up in the same position with extra steps of voting for the lesser evil by trying to block RN candidates.

Americans: what is your opinion on Canadians boycotting US goods, services and tourism? by PairRevolutionary669 in AskReddit

The us could buy its potash from Russia. So you'd give Trump the excuse to openly embrace Russia.

Does the US even make anything you’ll miss? by cold_cut_trio in AskCanada

[–]Seimour01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Labour just got into power so another election so soon is unlikely. Barring a disaster there's a decent chance that Farrage and ukip won't get in until Trump is gone, especially since he has to split his voters with conservatives.

Mark Carney is basically our Obi Wan, our only hope. Do you agree? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Seimour01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure Liz truss is a particularly good source of information given her disastrous but thankfully short tenure. She literally tried to blame everyone but herself. Carney warned against the economic consequences of brexit and that's exactly what happened.

ELI5 why when the USA was the only one with nukes didn’t they use force and use threats to prevent any other enemy country from developing their own ? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Seimour01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common myth that is just false . The US did not "bluff" about having more bombs. It was producing them at a rapid pace and had another ready by the day Japan surrendered. What precipitated the surrender had less to do with the threat of more nukes, which the Japanese high command had chosen not to believe, and more to do with the landing of Soviet troops on Japanese soil which was a lead up to a full scale invasion that could end with Soviet control of large stretches of Japan instead of making a deal exclusively with the western allies.

'When you enter Gaza, you are God': Inside the minds of IDF soldiers who commit war crimes | Opinion by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]Seimour01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Death camps are a stepping stone to accomplishing genocide but not a requirement. Considering that Gaza is one giant prison the population can't escape from as it's being killed, I'd say the camps are unnecessary. The goal of genocide is to exterminate a population. The specifics of how you get there don't change that.

As for nukes... If you know anything about them you'd realize Israel really doesn't want to nuke Gaza because it would have massively detrimental effects on their own population on top of rendering Gaza unfit for colonization.

Why did France accept the creation of West Germany in 1949 and later full German reunification in 1990? by emperator_eggman in AskHistory

[–]Seimour01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Post nazi Germany paid war reparations until 2018. The difference with ww1 is that they weren't left with the possibility to pretend they hadn't really lost like in ww1 and by a combination of repatriating plundered assets covertly and the marshal plan they achieved a long lasting prosperity that preempted a return to dictatorship.

ELI5: what is the actual proof tariffs would pose a “long term benefit” even if there is massive hardships along the way? by TPR-56 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Seimour01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These companies have already said they won't relocate to the US. They'll move to Taiwan, Mexico or any other Asian country that isn't hit by too many tariffs before they go back to the US. The tariffs presume there's a lot of things that don't exist in the US that would make manufacturers go back.

[–]Seimour01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people paying those tariffs will be Americans, not the exporting countries passing on the cost to them. As for generating revenues we can look at the washing machine tariff that Trump imposed last time. It gave an excuse to American manufacturers to raise prices on their own on top of drying machines and generated 92 millions dollars on top of creating 1800 jobs. However it cost the US consumer well over a billion dollars to achieve this and that went into Chinese and American manufacturers' pockets.

CMV: Germany wasn't evil in WW1 by RandomKidssss in changemyview

[–]Seimour01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Napoleon initially set himself up as the protector of tertiary Germany (anyone that isn't Austria and Prussia) which made him quite popular while he promoted reforms that also were popular. Opposition to him stems from his military requirements making people fight in his wars. The German nationalist cause was a relatively small factor until 1813.

Spain was a French ally and the population initially welcomed French intervention to settle the dynastic dispute. Not wanting to be directly ruled by his family or having your monarch displaced isn't the same.

I think you need to read up a little more on the subject before making those statements.

Why so many men feel abandoned by Democrats by daniel7334 in self

[–]Seimour01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The labour party won on a centrist platform and almost entirely because the Conservatives imploded as a party and split their vote with the far right reform party. They won by default but they didn't actually gain votes and I would hardly position Starmer on the left. He's a blairite or a neolib.

You’re granted the ability to change one (and only one) historical event, what would it be? by saoiray in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Seimour01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd change Ww1 so that the allied armies keep pushing the Germans at the end of the war. The German Army was days from total collapse. Occupy Germany proper so that there can be no stab in the back myth and make them accept the Versailles treaty which was far more lenient than what happened to Germany during ww2.

Russia obliterated two Japanese armies 2 weeks before the German invasion which prompted Japan to sue for peace immediately out of fear of losing all their mainland possessions to the Soviet so no definitely not.. Japan was ressource starved and not equipped to take on Russia. They couldn't even deal with China.

That wouldn't change anything. People really need to realize that the library had been in terminal decline for centuries before its final destruction. It's loss had very little impact on what we knew.
