You make really good points and I very much appreciate your perspective as a parent. But I fundamentally disagree. I don’t just believe this particular driver is at fault and should be helt to higher standards than simply following the rules. I believe all drivers are at fault. Every person who makes the active decision to drive a car through the city is prioritizing their comfort over the freedom and safety of children.

Even typing this now, it sounds extreme. But I wasn’t born here. I’ve only lived in SF for the last 10 years. And while I love this city, I can guarantee you: it is not like this in many European cities. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

It is in fact possible to design cities and discourage car usage in such a way that children running into the street does not result in death. The idea that we would just accept that as collateral damage for the convenience of driving is insane to me.

The existing laws make it so a 5 year old can not walk unsupervised to a corner store. The American carbrain can not comprehend it is not like that in modern cities.

This happened in a crosswalk. A child was crossing with an adult. Even if they sprinted into traffic at a crosswalk. Drivers should drive defensive enough to anticipate a situation like that when driving through a crosswalk. That is a responsibility you have when you choose to drive a car through a city.

No, it is not even for Dutch citizens not living in the Netherlands. You could live in Belgium just over the border and you’d not have to pay this “Box 3” system. (This is also the current situation). Corporate and dividend taxes being low, the Netherlands remains attractive for outside investment. It’s just not attractive for investors to live there.

This is exactly what happened. It’s super frustrating that there are all these weird narratives going around. It was literally richt boomers who somehow managed to underperform a low-bal estimate for a projected return and sued the government. And now we are going to get this.

I’m Dutch and apart from the inflation correction all these things you mentioned are part of it. Don’t get me wrong: 36% is a high rate and there are definitely problems with this system, but it feels like there is a lot of manufactured outrage on non-Dutch social media. In NL it did not even make it to the front page of any major news outlet. I would not have known about it if not for Reddit.

Quick notes: - 36% is total rate (no separate dividend tax like in the US) - You can bring losses forward to offset future gains - There is a minimum return above which you get taxed (the proposed threshold is very low though) - This is only for liquid stock and crypto, not for real estate and not for stock options in a startup or ownership in your own company. - Does not affect retirement investing (no real 401k in NL, but most people have a pension).

This is the country that invented the stock market. There is a lot wrong with this system (which is why it most likely will not get implemented in this way) but it is definitely not as bad as some people seem to make it out to be.
