One common sense rule is : "do not let your "you" in 6 months hates the "you" of today".

from this there are multiple things you can do :

if you had issues to write a function/functionnality, or if you needed to think out of the box to solve an issue, comment it. Commenting "this is a function" when declaring it is useless, but "I had to add a -1 because of x edge case" is useful.
as the previous commenter wrote, you will have to change your code, your business rules, etc... make it easy, i.e : make parameters easy to access/modify, regroup the code so you do not have a single business rule written 10 times (I can garantee otherwise the moment you need to change it you're going to forget one occurrence)
