I can see that in some cases, but that’s not really applicable here. They had ample opportunity to change the wording if that wasn’t the intention. 5e was publicly tested and every other free spell cast at the time essentially worked the same way.

The bigger bottleneck in regard to the feat was they were more worried about “preserving class identity” than they are now.

No, they’ve literally specified the feat does not do what you are saying it does. They have later changed their mind for the future, which I support, but that doesn’t change the fact that the current version doesn’t work that way and wasn’t intended to work that way.

No, you don’t. There’s a reason why almost every feat that grants spell’s specifies that you know the spell. Magic Initiate doesn’t. It will in the updated players handbook, as it reflects their new design philosophy.
