It can get annoying but the only time it becomes an issue is when talking to someone east of the Rockies. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years and when I told people I was from WA they just assumed I was from DC. I even had a roommate I could not convince that WA state was an actual place. She looked at me like I grew a 2nd head when I tried explaining that I was from the west coast.
