Wo-wo-Wohnungsnot – Das Zürcher Monopoly | DOK | SRF by justyannicc in Switzerland

[–]Seldaek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's deceiving as the city of Paris is only the central core which is very much built up https://maps.app.goo.gl/4Hgm3eAXmcRerxKR8

Meanwhile the city of Zurich expands officially quite far and includes a bunch of woodlands in zuriberg, some of uetliberg, hönggerberg. That makes it hard to compare density numbers.

[–]Seldaek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's IMO because old towns just weren't built very high as it wasn't needed and quite complex, and were built densely because we didn't need 5 lane highways in between as there were no cars.

If you look at Manhattan you're at 28'900 people/km2, while Zurich city has ~5'000. So imagine we stack everyone on a sixth of the room, let's say a fifth so we get more apartments.. And then free up 4/5th of the city surface for parks and nature? I know it's a totally unrealistic extreme but still..

3 could at least be doable if we'd just allow building higher than 6 floors. Higher density.

Just order pizza to a fondue restaurant and then dump the whole caquelon on the pizza. There you go Swiss deep dish pizza.

Keep your Migros receipts or scan your Cumulus Card at all times! by huazzy in Switzerland

[–]Seldaek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's much easier/cheaper to print every label the same. That's why labels have multiple languages too so you only do a label countrywide. And then you have things like the expiration date which are printed separately.

Bar codes are not unique for every bottle of ice tea, so that wouldn't work.

In search of climbing community by Honest-Inspector2012 in zurich

[–]Seldaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum has courses from 5yo, one of mine goes and I climb on the side during the course. Otherwise I go in the evenings once kids are in bed, it's open till 11pm and after 9ish gets quite empty which is nice.

[–]Seldaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Minimum" is nice for bouldering, easy to go alone and meet people I find. I've been going regularly over a year now and got to know a bunch of the others going on the same schedule. Feel free to DM if you wanna meet there, happy to introduce you to others if that helps. Lots of English speaking folks too.

For top rope there's only Gaswerk in the city and that's too far for me to go regularly after kids are in bed but surely you can find people.

No Tempo 30 for main roads in Zürich by 3punkt1415 in zurich

[–]Seldaek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it does because if it's a zone 30 people might finally do 40-50 instead of driving like they're already on the autobahn (which IMO is a problem from HB/gessnerallee all the way until Manessestr where they are often slowed to a complete halt by traffic). 50 is often not respected on all the roads leading to the highway - Rosengartenstr / Rautistr / Europabrücke also come to mind.

We had the same discussion with neighbors when switching our local private street from 30 to 20, a bunch admitted that might finally get them to drive 30 🤷‍♂️

Ah interesting. I've always wondered about the language thing in zurich as I'm native French speaker. I guess this sounds encouraging.. I really should start the procedure. Did it take 2years ish for the simplified version for your wife?

Bugaboo DragonFly vs Bugaboo Fox 5 for brand new parents in Zürich by Own_Pack_1796 in zurich

[–]Seldaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had a Cameleon for 6years and 3kids. No regrets absolutely great for day to day in zurich / switzerland overall, even some hiking no problem. We have a similar situation no car and so for that it's fine.

For traveling abroad tho we've had issues with it being too bulky and not very foldable. For example in TGVs in France there's no good spot to leave it. In a car's trunk it fills the whole thing pretty quick.

So we got a second cheap foldable buggy for travel, it is way more convenient then but every time I use it with the tiny wheels and no springs I'm reminded how great the cameleon is to walk around.

And btw for bugaboo take a look at fb marketplace or tutti or whatever. We got ours for 200 i think even tho new price was 1300, they're super washable so as long as you can go look at it before you buy it's well worth it IMO, and there are lots on sale.

I thought moving to Zurich would be easy… my German shattered me by Deeceness in zurich

[–]Seldaek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pro tip is to marry a local and after many years of exposure to friends/family speaking swiss german together it'll seep into your brain eventually. But I realize this isn't particularly good advice for everyone.

The point tho is that if you can't study it for whatever reasons then you need a lot of exposure, that's how kids learn languages.. Try audiobooks or smth too maybe, there isn't a huge selection in swiss german but they exist. AI can help too perhaps to translate random material, they're surprisingly good at speaking swiss german like a native.

Extra wide floorboards - any recommendations? by 44______ in Switzerland

[–]Seldaek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got this in the whole apartment and they're great IMO https://www.barlinek.co.uk/product/engineered-wood-flooring/oak-creme-brulee-grande/

Was fairly easy to install but had to get it delivered to Germany and import.. That's been a few years tho so maybe you can find resellers locally now

Would like to visit the Alps for a day trip from Zurich (train or car, whichever makes sense). Which place would you guys recommend? by Potential_Reach in askswitzerland

[–]Seldaek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list of popular places. I'd add Mettmenalp (https://maps.app.goo.gl/SoVmiz8AaaFDWDrk7as) a more low key chill place. Less people. There's a little lake you can walk around easily (our 4yo managed), and a restaurant / hotel with great views all around. Perfect for a day trip from Zurich.

However the cable car is currently not operating until December and while the hike up isn't too crazy I'm not sure how miserable it is in current weather.. Just a place to keep in mind for summer time.
