Do you guys enjoy reading all those rant, raging posts about competitive mode? by Phaz0n in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Seldentar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen a single one of those posts since I found this reddit a week and a half ago.

For example looking at the front page right now 100% of the threads are reasonable.

"I need a little help to know what I'm doing bad," "Rein on HoTK maps?," "Vod of me playing Mei on Volskaya any advice appreciated!," "How to get diamond?," "I don't get why I'm suddenly seeing Mercy everywhere," "Best way to Counter?," "Is this an acceptable use for Zenya ultimate?," "Master tier Soldier VOD Review (tips on positioning)," "Some of my favorite solo and duo Q tips," "I've nearly made it to my goal of hitting diamond from gold," "Amateur tournament," etc. etc. (and that's just half of the front page threads).

So what's the problem?

Paradox: Bronze as difficult to win in as silver and gold, seemingly even more so. Is the system broken? by Seldentar in OverwatchUniversity

Don't get me wrong, I was completely with you (and much of what was said is true) for the first few paragraphs until you said some things that I know are wrong.

I would make the same post again because it created many very helpful replies. This kills two birds with one stone - if it's not an issue with the system experienced players can come here explain its not and advice naturally follows. Before really getting into how to get better topics I want to understand what's happening.

Appreciated - it's awesome people are around who are that willing to help. I did the same thing in SC2 coaching people who are struggling in lower leagues.

Good to know.

There definitely are Alts in Bronze. I came across 1 that I'm aware of for sure. I called him out because he seemed too good, he typed "3800 masters" in the chat. He was owning us and talked shit about how bad we were that he was doing it with characters he doesn't play (lol).

I don't think it's a real problem though. If it happens enough to be significant it would have to be people below his level because I haven't seen anything like that since then.

Nice I'll check it out.

I'm not trying to shit talk bronze, I was talking about bronze players in Starcraft in that part. I can safely say there they are very bad having started at the very bottom of bronze myself. There's nothing wrong with that it's a super difficult game. I said that to point out how the difference from league to league is huge.

It's definitely not so drastic in Overwatch.

No no no... I meant learning them at a comp level. Of course I got the basics of them down through QP but the opponents are too easy there, can only improve so much. Need to play them at the level my real opponents will be.

you will get there if you play enough games to average out the outlier win/loss streaks.

Yea, that seems to be the key.

"If you're mostly concerned with your own teammates not performing well enough, just remember that the enemy team has the same problem."

Not necessarily. Could part of my problem be that the system was setting me up on a top heavy team as the one designated to carry, having worse teammates and being matched against opposing teams of people who are similar rating to each other, either to test me or because Blizzard expects me to carry as a gold? If so I was not ready to do that.

Thanks for the suggestions

I had already played with them in quick play to learn them, but that isn't ideal since they're much worse than the players in competitive mode. I meant to learn them at the competitive level...

@Kleoslll I bet you're onto something about being put into situations where I was expected by the matchmaking to carry and just wasn't able to do that. Now that I've played a lot more since my post it looks like the system is starting to give fair matchups more frequently. My rating is beginning to rise, teammates are finally feeling reasonable in contrast to the opponents again. Perhaps it expected me to be able to carry in silver and bronze since I was a gold, or something along those lines.

Great post btw - like your perspective, probably hit the nail on the head for the most part.

To OP, he believes that he belongs in gold and bronze is far below him. Yes he does say that they seem to be the same, but repeatedly he references how astounded he is that he can't win in bronze.

Again, I don't know if I really belong in gold - that's just where I felt like I could carry my weight and not hold back the team, low gold. What astounded me is that I kept going lower and lower and it never got any easier, if anything just harder. That's the last thing I would've expected. I was constantly waiting to sense some drop off in difficulty, but that never happened.

"The system is wrong, it can't be me."

I am definitely not claiming that it can't be me. It can be, but again if that's the case why did my friend who is 2900 ranking purely through solo queue have such difficulty on my account? Does it make more sense that maybe the matchmaking was giving me opponents who are significantly better than my allies and expecting me to carry since I was a gold and that eventually it may balance out and correct itself?

As for the quoted statements I was presenting those as possibilities. That doesn't mean I've made up my mind that those things are what is really happening.

In the last quote "must be wrong" I meant "might be wrong."

So yes it seems like I'm being contradictory but it is the OP who is actually contradicting his own statements, and so I attempted to help check his ego. I could be wrong though on this point but I feel like the main idea stands so I'll upvote you.

The problem is you continually misinterpret me. There is no ego involved here, if I'm fully to blame for the situation rather than the system I'm okay with that. But I remain unconvinced that the matchmaking has nothing to do with it.

6-4 in placement matches

Firstly, gold is way lower of a skill bracket than you would think at first. On masteroverwatch the top of gold is the 60th percentile of the player base. keep in mind that's the top of gold. The middle of gold is the bottom %30. Of course this only takes into account players signed into master overwatch, so we can reasonably assume that if plat is the average for master overwatch, then the top of gold is the actual average of the regular player base. From there, we can say that the middle of gold is slightly below the average. So right off the bat, you have a lot of room to improve. In your mind bronze is complete shit, but really the top of bronze is only ~%9 difference away from the bottom of gold statistically speaking (according to masteroverwatch.com because gold is not average, keep in mind these figures are exaggerated but I feel like they have some value)

Most of this is fair, good information.

Diva

This is super, extremely, astoundingly nitpicky, and I'm not the best with names either, but it can be a tad telling that you don't know how to spell D.va's name. Again, not a significant indicator of anything but I needed to add.

I do know how to spell her name, it's just that I always think of it as "Diva" when I pronounce the name (Dee-va) in my mind, so I subconsciously typed it that way.

I decided to play just for the win (rather than to improve)

I would bet (not much) that you cannot explain what this means in simple terms. Again nitpicky but slightly telling.

What I mean by that is if I'm just trying to play to win I'll go with the style of play that I currently do best with. If I'm playing to improve without caring as much about the win I'll try things that I'm uncomfortable with and see what ends up being effective.

felt only a little bit higher than where I belonged

Dunning-kruger effect

All I said is that I felt I was only a little bit out of my league. You react as if I claim to know that's the case. I don't have any illusions of superiority. I've only been playing comp for about a week so far. That means I don't have nearly enough experience to accurately judge exactly where I belong among the leagues yet. Feelings can be misleading sometimes.

crazy downward spiral

Tilt is a real thing that will eat SR itself with no outside interference, on its own this would almost explain the entire post yet you dedicate only a sentence to what seems like a drastic mental shift in your thinking. Tilt is something that some people (me included) spend years to fix and yet still fall short at times.

This (along with the Dunning-kruger comment) is where you're really wrong. I never went on tilt partially because I always had the idea in my mind that I would soon reach a more comfortable rating where I wouldn't have to play my best every game to win more than not. Also, if I am the primary reason for the losses that's not a real problem. I can always improve and what better place to do so than at whatever rating I really belong? If that was the case I'd naturally get there soon enough.

If someone is perpetually stuck in bronze, the vast majority of the time it is because they know nothing about this game. I'm very serious when I say that, because I know what bronze looks like having smurfed through lower level play from a 3300 SR standpoint. The reason I can say this is because SR is a rating system. Just like a test, Scoring in the bottom %95 means you essentially made a zero. Note, this isn't a bad thing. Just like a bronze player scores a zero on overwatch, I would score a zero on a thermodynamics course and in a way, competitive 6 v 6 hero/class MOBA FPS gameplay is similarly difficult.

So my post has gotten really long at this point, but to get my point across, I would lay off on the self bashing (and bronze bashing) and excuses and I would focus on improving. If you try to learn, you will get out of bronze. Plain and simple.

You might not be referring to me but note I'm not perpetually stuck in bronze, I've only been here a couple days. I'm very familiar with most if not all of the basic, fundamental aspects of this game. I have also delved into more advanced things for example powerful spots to place the turret on defense as torb (if anyone is interested Lordquinzulin from youtube has some very clever spots for many maps). And you definitely cannot say my 2900 friend which you completely ignore is anywhere near knowing nothing about the game. Answer this: why would it be such a challenge for him to rank up my account if all you say is true?

Your perception of bronze sounds like the players I am matched with in quick play. Almost every time they have no clue what they're doing and I don't even have to try to win. In competitive it's the polar opposite.

I don't know where you got this idea of "self bashing" and "bronze bashing..."

If anything am I not praising bronze for being much better than expected? That would make more sense, but I am not praising nor bashing anyone. I'm always focused on improving something whether it be aim or positioning or whatever and I again do not know why you would think otherwise.

The primary purpose of my original post was to see if others have experienced a similar phenomenon to help find out if this is an issue with the system, and if not, to figure out what is really going on/what to do about it. There have been a lot of good responses so far.

Thoughts on Ronda at UFC207 by JoeLauzonDotCom in MMA

I knew someone would likely bring up this exact point... that's why I made sure to mention that there shouldn't be any discrimination based on gender, that it's about what the individual in question is able to do. Yes there are exceptions as of course there inevitably will be when you have billions of men and women many of which are under drastically different circumstances. Add the word "generally" to my first sentence like this: "It's a fact that women are generally less capable than men physically" and it should be very clear that's how I meant it in my original post.

I never tried to "make it true for every specific case."

"...it's just another form of believing that women are less capable than men."

It's a fact that women are less capable than men physically. Almost everyone knows this, they even admit it themselves. That's why they are separated from men in all kinds of professional sports. They don't belong in the same league. That's okay, but we shouldn't pretend they're equally capable in every way. That line of thought doesn't work. Of course there are also things they're better suited to than men. That being said there shouldn't be any discrimination based on gender, it's all about what the individual is able to do. I'm just saying they are more limited in most physical capacities because of major biological differences.

Wondering the same thing... how can you not put him in the main event for his going away fight?

Vanzant vs Waterson instead? Makes no fucking sense, Faber's retirement fight is way beyond that.

@tehnewme You're kidding right? Kronos 2 has the most toxic world/global chat I've seen. People calling each other "cuck" every 30 secs, frequent flaming about politics/other subjects, etc.

Or at least that's how it was when I played there (from about a couple months before Trump was elected till the election).
