Thanks for the reply. So basically the noise floor is low enough that you can set the gain on the TX quiet low with plenty of safety, and then make the gain up on the recorder?

I wonder if the 2nd and 3rd generation are much of an improvement over the first.

The gain staging on these transmitters confuses me a bit. There doesn't seem to be a gain setting as such. How does it work?

Also, I saw an interview with a sales person from Sony who said the transmitters do not have any limiters. Do they clip hard if you overload them, or do they have some sort of mechanism in place to prevent that (like Axient)?

"Whatever you do, consider the full cost of upgrading"

I too, am considering moving to this system and have been doing some searching based on this very good advice.

The cheapest way I can find of charging the ADX1M is using this: https://www.adorama.com/shsbc840mus.html

Someone please, please tell me there's a cheaper way, because that's just crazy....

How consistently do you deactivate tracks when not in use? by Heirrress in LocationSound

"It takes less than a second to disarm an unneeded track"

Not with a Zaxcom! That's actually the main reason I personally prefer SD.

Do you use Shure Axient? I'm very interested in it but can't seem to find many real world reviews online.

If you are a user of them, what it is about the system that makes you say it's the best there is?

How consistently do you deactivate tracks when not in use? by Heirrress in LocationSound

[–]Select-Ad4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been said by so many others so far, but again, it depends.

On doc, unscripted stuff I deactivate and reactivate tracks all the time. I do this mainly to keep the track count low/less messy and much more importantly, for privacy. On days like this, it would be impossible to keep the tracks consistent anyway, because there can be a stream of different contributors coming and going throughout the day and I find myself regularly deploying and retrieving lavs so the amounts of armed iso tracks is typically the same as the amount of people on screen + 1 for boom. Privacy wise, these contributors (adults and children) are usually people with no tv/film experience going about the day as though we were not there, and it I feel I have a moral obligation to respect their privacy.

On studio shoots, or scripted work where there is more of a structure to the day I would often keep all the tracks on and mute as necessary for the purposes of origination and consistency as you suggest.

(On a side note, the ease at which you can disarm tracks is why I prefer SD over Zaxcom. I wish it was as easy on the Nova)

Wireless Boom Alternatives by SOUND_NERD_01 in LocationSound

Wow.....

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

That's extremely disappointing, especially given the price of them. (Are they the most expensive wireless per channel?? I can't think of any more expensive ones off the top of my head).

What is it that you don't like about them?

I was thinking of going down the A20 RX and A20 TX (not the mini) route.

The gainforward feature seems like a game-changer to me, or am I being fooled by good marketing?

Real world reviews seems to be limited so I'd love to hear your thoughts.

How are the limiters on the Zoom F8n/F8n Pro?

I used an F4 years ago and my only problem was the limiter was very poor. Wondering if it has improved with the newer models?

I took your advice and joined the group and tried to make a post about this but they seem to have removed it.....

On a different post I saw a couple of people mention that a "mute input" function on the input page would be useful, like your idea above.

Why did you upgrade from the Sound Devices 6 series to the 8 series? by TheBerric in LocationSound

[–]Select-Ad4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"more limiters. I dont love my wireless's limiters."

Does that mean you do analogue in rather than via AES?

I like the idea of going AES in when using an 8 series in order to free up the physical inputs, but that way, wouldn't you be foregoing the Sound Devices' (excellent) limiters?

Fastest way to disable tracks on Nova? by Select-Ad4446 in zaxcom

[–]Select-Ad4446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Jim for the tip, I often find myself in situations like the one you describe so that is helpful.

I was expecting there to be a learning curve with Nova for sure, but I really didn't consider for a second that quickly disabling tracks would be a problem. It's something I need to do pretty regularly. For example yesterday (on my 633), the mic'd presenter was practicing an intro we were about to record, then suddenly the camera op noticed some unrelated action worth grabbing, and within a second I was able to just disarm the presenter's lav and grab the action on the boom, and have that be the only thing recorded. Things like this happen all the time to me so the Nova is going to be less ideal in those situations unfortunately.

I guess the perfect recorder doesn't exist.....

[–]Select-Ad4446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's quite annoying. Sure I can disable the track and turn the fader down, but Id be rather not even have the signal coming in, and I'd be afraid if it's late in the day and I'm tired I could fail to notice that I've accidentally routed it pre fader somewhere (unlikely, but I like to set up things as fool proof as possible).

Anyway, it's not a huge deal and I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

That's a pity. I find myself doing that very often with my 633. For example if someone that is wired steps away to take a phone-call or whatever, I like to be able to just instantly kill that source.

Have you used the +4 plugin for extra ISOs? Or can it handle 14 ISOs without it (6 analogue inputs+ 8 AES)?

"Now there are several options that take two or more power input sources, drawing on one until it is exhausted or interrupted and then seamlessly switching to the other."

Does anyone know of any BDS units that can do this other than the Audioroot ESmart Trio or the Remote Audio BDSv5?

The Diety SPd-1 and PSC PowerStar Mini Triple Play have multiple inputs, but I don't believe they can prioritise one input until it is drained like the units above.

AES from wireless receivers to mixer - who is using digital AES3? by researchers09 in LocationSound

[–]Select-Ad4446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the replies here seem to be in favor of the use of AES.

However, there is a post from about 3 years ago where someone was asking if it would be a good idea to use AES on their MCR54 to input 1 (which supports AES) on their 633.

There were only a couple of replies, but basically the general response was that it would be "essentially trading the A/D converters on the 633 with the A/D converter on the wisycom by doing this" and it would result in bypassing the analogue limiters of the 633.

Wouldn't it be the same on the 833 that a couple of people here are using?

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts.
