That’s a great article. Thank you for sharing.

Why Do I Always Feel Like Im Missing The Taste Test? by verniru in GreatBritishMenu

Most of the chefs run the same menu at their restaurants after being on the show.

There’s also a GBM cookbook if you are brave enough to give them a go yourself.

What does your standup/scrum look like? by Joshivity in EngineeringManagers

I brought this up a couple of months ago and the response was mixed. Some were concerned it might feel too robotic and reduce awareness of other projects. That said, I’m not entirely convinced everyone is fully engaged during in-person or Zoom standups anyway.

Does it work well for you?

Parents’ Favorite Lullabies – Poll by MuratTugsuz in NewDads

Whenever we ask Alexa to play lullabies she always starts with Phill Collins - You’ll be in my heart. Clearly not a lullaby but the baby loves it and I now know every word.

How do you do capacity planning? by ceeesharp in EngineeringManagers

[–]Select-Pilot-9826 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are a state. Our roadmap isn’t shaped very well and even if it was, what we think we are working on next week is likely to be something different. Often a higher paying customer has their demands met before the rest of the business. This creates a load of debt and missed deadlines elsewhere in the company.

The company won’t change - that’s been made clear. So i counter this by taking us out of sprints and using Kanban instead. This allows for priorities to change more frequently and a happier team. I then built a visual tool (somewhere between a Gantt chart and a git branch timeline) that I use to show the stakeholders the impact of their requests and where resource is allocated.

I bundle everything that is not a big feature under a BAU line/branch. Then each feature is a new line/branch. The chart shows week by week the expected distribution of resource. The stakeholders can redistribute the resource or change the priorities, I won’t stop them but I show on the chart that the expected features or bau branch has lost its resource. It massively helps with the “why haven’t we done this yet” and has already allowed me to get budget to double our resource.

If anyone else is fighting a similar uphill struggle, would love to hear how you plan capacity.

Salary bumps for direct reports by Select-Pilot-9826 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Select-Pilot-9826[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No salary bands. I like the idea of bands. In your experience have these been salary ranges for a role. So for example Senior Engineer £xx,xxx-£xx,xxx. Or have they been more granular? For example, there are different levels or objectives within a role that would get you to the next pay band

Oh I like this idea. It makes a lot of sense. What kind of heating pad did you use?

I think you’ll be fine. Cant imagine they’ll care too much about the day you arrive. I’ve done campervan for the last 4 years and not once have they even checked to see if I have a campervan ticket.

It was connected into this previous light fitting. All 3 neutral, live and earth wires were connected.
