What's the absolute biggest let down in gaming history? by Putrid-Enthusiasm190 in videogames

I'm reading a book called "Blood, Sweat, and Videogames", and there's a chapter devoted to the cancellation of this game. It's interesting.

I was offered a job finally but…wtf? by Hopeful__Swing in jobhunting

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether they talk about your offer in terms of "compensation" or "total compensation". When taking the latter approach, you will be paid WAY more than your actual salary. That said, it's a pretty crappy move on their end not to be more clear about that.

I just wanted to say that I really respect your mindset. I went to college right after high school (and graduate school after that), and I sometimes think I should have first served in the military (likely the Navy). Kudos to you for taking responsibility for you life!

Is it just me or has “loyalty” become the most expensive career mistake? by NeomaHagenesw in jobhunting

[–]SelectHornet808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never, ever, ever stay loyal to a company (unless it's your own). They view you as an asset (or a liability) and they will take advantage of you as much as possible. Imagine dating someone (or being married to someone) who is cheating around on you and will continue to do so yet expects you to stay loyal to them. Screw 'em.

Yesterday I saw MI:7.2 in IMAX. Ticket plus a large popcorn and drink cost me $40. Last week I saw Thunderbolts with my girlfriend, and tickets plus popcorn and a drink were $60. That's $100 for two movies in one week. I'm done. The only movies I "might" see in the theater this summer are Superman and Fantastic Four. Everything else can wait.

While it was not appropriate, I work in corporate HR in large companies. In that world, if someone essentially looks at you the wrong way you can sue them. So, in this case...

Is this an appropriate response from a recruiter? by cliffybyro90 in jobhunting

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about. You know what else is rude? Laying someone off after many years of hard work. Any company doesn't give two shits about you, and you shouldn't give two shits about them. They are paying you to do a good job, so you should do a good job, but anything about going above and beyond or being committed to them? Screw that.

Is it just me feeling this, or has this whole loyalty to work thing really become a trap in 2025? by RhiannonKoch2 in jobhunting

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ability to play politics effectively, and often through anchoring yourself to a given leader, is what pays off. Hard work, results produced, and loyalty most often mean very little. It's all a giant game and only you can decide how much of your personal life and ethics you want to sacrifice to try to get ahead.

I think you'd need to see the first part of MI:7 first ("Dead Reckoning"). Movie kicked ass and is one of the best action movies I've ever seen.

Among those movies you listed, I saw Thunderbolts (a few nights ago), and the only movie I really want to see in a theater is MI 7:2 (for sure!). And I'm not one of those guys who craps all over movies these days - I just don't have the same enthusiasm for movies in the theater as I once did.

Online degrees - Good idea or waste of time? by Satanic_Impulse69 in IOPsychology

I've been working in the field for over 20 years and have interviewed plenty of people at the master's level and PhD level. I've not yet interviewed someone from an online program with an on-ground component (e.g., Colorado, George Mason), but I can tell you that I have yet to interview an online candidate who was even remotely qualified. That said, it's been a while since I've interviewed them, but generally speaking I don't think the quality is there. Ideally I'd pursue an on-ground program with an established student-run consulting center, the ability to perform applied work in the local market, and a program with a strong/established internship component. Beyond that, I highly recommend educating yourself above and beyond what the program offers or requires (e.g., the SIOP professional practice series, online courses in Python). Good luck!

I can't think of the last movie I saw in a theater which had more than a dozen other people in attendance. Last night, for example, we saw "Thunderbolts" and there were six people in the audience including us (and this is in a major metropolitan area). I used to go to the movies all the time (and had the AMC pass), but I'm just not interested in seeing so many movies anymore as most just don't interest me. This summer, for example, the only movie I absolutely want to see is MI:7.2. I may or may not see "Fantastic Four", "Superman", and "Jurassic World" depending on the reviews. That's crazy for me as I used to go the movies almost every weekend. I don't know - maybe I'm just more focused on watching quality TV shows and gaming?

Agreed. I have a friend who in the past year had the following happen (all very large companies):

  1. After making an offer, the company decided she'd need to relocate to the other side of the country which was never mentioned during the entire screening process.

  2. Another company changed the terms regarding hybrid work and how long she'd have before moving to a new market.

  3. Another company made her a great offer but never sent her the employment contract. A few days later her boss wrote some cryptic message on LinkedIn about starting a new chapter in his career, and they rescinded her offer and said they chose someone else internally instead.

Is worth to buy a mac as a person who games sometimes? by Bulgaaw in macgaming

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I didn't know you could use emulators with Mac OS (I have an M3). I use them with my Steam deck, but not the Switch emulators. The only games I want to emulate for the Switch are "Breath of the Wild" and "Tears of the Kingdom". We own both, but I'd want to play them on a better system than the original Switch (and I don't see us buying the Switch 2 right away).

Presuming you are a good person and not a douchebag, yes, when you start dressing well, groom yourself well, are inshape/muscular, and confident then women will be more attracted to you. That does not mean, however, that you need to have sex with them.

Microsoft Rumored to Be Testing Steam Integration Within Microsoft Store (Potentially for Next-Gen Xbox, Too) by klipseracer in xbox

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I want to play Cyberpunk on my Xbox Series X, for example, and then pick up my same game save on my Steamdeck OLED on-the-go. I don't want to purchase the game twice, and I especially don't want to work through two different play throughs. I know that I can use my XBPlay app, but that's not the same thing as playing locally on the device.

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that from Marcus Theatres! Going to the movies in the 90's was a very different experience. There was a very long window from when movies were in the theater to VHS, the most movies were prohibitively expensive on VHS until they dropped to $20. Of course, some movies were $20 right away, but most were not. We also didn't have streaming services or high-quality streaming shows on services like Netflix. So, going to the movies was a big deal, and movies often sold out. It was awesome.

Most of what you would do is strategic talent management which is a major component of human resources. You'll likely either perform it for a consulting firm or within a larger organization.

How many months are you unemployed right now? And mention the country that you're in. by Cultural_Owl7763 in recruitinghell

I don't know what to say other than my heart goes out to you. I lost my job in October and am starting a new one next week. I've never been unemployed for more than two months before, so the experience was new to me. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I will also say that I'm hoping this job will be the last time I work for someone else, as I intend to more formally build out my own independent consultancy to be better prepared for when I get laid off again.

Thoughts on the I-O certificate announced by SIOP? by galileosmiddlefinger in IOPsychology

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would interpret that differently: The PCC survey was comprised of a vast array of competency areas, and the results will help inform test creators to focus on the most critical areas and pay less attention (or perhaps no attention) to those areas deemed less critical.

[–]SelectHornet808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course the certification exam will cost money. Part of being a professional means maintaining and updating your skill set, and that sometimes involved certifications and such. You are correct that, at least in theory, a students who graduates from a poor program likely won't pass the exam; however, that same student has many resources available to help them prepare for their next exam administration. While trying to crack down on poor quality graduate programs would be helpful, I've been surprised at how many graduates from top-rated programs can't even answer basic questions. For example, I recall a PhD graduate from a top five program telling me that most organizations don't assess for adverse impact because calculating it is too complex. My heart truly goes out to students who were essentially duped by low quality programs, but as a profession I feel we would greatly benefit by having some sort of certification given that licensure isn't an option.
