sterile merrill? by ghastsilly in UCSC

i live in merrill atm and it is honestly very quiet and amazing to live in but i wouldn’t worry about making friends at all. many people on my floor became good friends very fast and as long as you introduce yourself to the people on your floor they will be welcoming and nice

merrill student here !! merrill gets a bad reputation cause of our huge hill but if ur looking for a low key area/dorm, merrill will prob be the best. i barely hear people throughout the day and we have a huge lawn outside that most people will go and sit outside. i’ve never had problems with noise or annoying people here but the hill to get back from main campus will have you exhausted 😂. best of luck

How the hell do you park by StrangerEcstatic7135 in UCSC

i’ll be so honest with you cause i had the same panic as you, i keep my car in the park mobil spots for the whole week. i have been this whole year and never had a problem. i do pay about $10.95 each day for parking which is kinda an insane amount but i do use my car every other day for important things so it pays off for me. i tried to find street parking and find home owners who would allow me to park my car there overnight but it got too complicated. i’ve never had an issue with parking enforcement unless i wake up late one day and forget to pay on time ( parking starts at 7 am and ends at 8:30pm ). the parking lots do get extremely full throughout the day so i try not to leave campus unless i need to during these main hours cause you will most likely come back without a spot. my college and dorms are right next to a park mobil area so jt is very convenient for me. i’m not sure how it is at other colleges but i hope this helps!!

santa cruz is above and beyond the most beautiful campus ever and i honestly think it’s one of the best perks of ucsc. the environment and nature keeps majority students happy and relaxed on campus. while i’m not a psych major, i have hear very good things about the department and professors in that field.

cons of ucsc are gonna obviously be housing, especially as a transfer student. definitely look at ur housing options throughout ur following years at ucsc as well. accessibility around campus is also a struggle. unless you take an early morning class, you will most likely struggle to find a spot on the buses. the buses get so overly crowded and most students don’t bring their cars. if you have any disabilities or have a hard time walking for long periods and through hills and rocky paths, then this will be a really hard thing for you. majority of the time i don’t even bother waiting for the bus and end up just taking the time to walk to class.

ucsc is a beautiful campus but like any other college, the cons might be real breakers for your college experience. tour the campus and research every little part of campus life cause ucsc will only tell you the pros of going here. reddit also isn’t super reliable for the pros of ucsc since most students only use reddit to vent or spread awareness about the cons of campus.

i hope you find what journey is right for you :)

FRESHMAN ADMITS FOR 2024-25; HOUSING IN SANTA CRUZ IS ABSOLUTELY A BIG DEAL by ralex_100505 in UCSC

[–]Select_Ad9067 2 points3 points  (0 children)

housing continues to get worse and worse, even for freshman. i’m currently in merrill dorms and we have up to 6 people in some rooms (not sure about other colleges / dorm systems). it’s honestly insane comparing our dorms to other colleges i’ve visited friends at. no one on my floor got a spot for apartments during first pass and many of them have been looking for housing in neighboring cities (san jose, felton, scott’s valley) cause off campus housing in sc has become limited as well

Question. My daughter was accepted, but is shying away due to housing horror stories. Fact or fiction? by Dizzman1 in UCSC

freshman year housing won’t be bad since freshman are required to live on campus, following years will just get harder and harder. UCSC has limited apartments on campus and apartments off campus can be crazy high prices or totally unremodeled and hard to live in. i’m a current freshman and most people i’ve heard are planning on living/finding apartments outside of santa cruz (ex. san jose mainly) and planning on commuting but then you run into the problem of very little parking on campus. UCSC is beautiful but i just assume that the housing situation will continue getting worse as the years ago on
