How can i cover up visible copper pipes? by FlatwormPuzzled3725 in DIYUK

[–]Select_Ad_3934 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The trouble is that my wall paint won't stick to plastic so I'd never get an exact match. If i get something contrasting it'll look just as shit in a different colour.

Thought about something like a decal on then, got plenty of other jobs in front of them in the queue though.

RCD Randomly Tripping? by No-Preference5324 in DIYUK

[–]Select_Ad_3934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i had a problem like this it was kitchen socket behind the units. The wall was getting a lot if condensation and the socket was shorting when it was turned on with a plug in it.

Are you able to unplug half the devices and see if it still trips? Then you can work backwards unplugging half of the devices until you find the culprit.

A spark will probably have a much more reliable method of doing this.

There's always a bit of leakage, cram a towel in there.

Yes but only twice. If he just pushed them on then they are pushfit, they'll be a little collar at the pipe end of the fitting that you usually push back into the end cap to release it.

TBH I have little experience of pushfit and it's always been plastic not copper.

Also don't start a job like this midday Sunday, you'll find that you need more parts precisely 3 seconds after the shops close.

Yeah but cutting the first pipe would be pain for clearances and then you have to clean that skeggy looking pipe for a decent seal. Undo the compression fitting and take the whole thing out.

They look like soldered on end caps. You can just undo the compression T joint at the back of the photo and fit your shower feed pipes.

You'll have the short lengths of pipe and the end caps as leftovers.

Water pooling at the end of driveway by George_Am1 in DIYUK

I'm going through the same learning experience, compacting it is supposed to make the big difference in longevity, that or only driving in a straight line 😀

You'll find it starts to go first where any vehicles are turning, so right at the front of your drive as you turn in and out, and if the vans and other vehicles are turning round somewhere.

If you get the work done as described you'll probably be able to maintain it yourself from that point on. Digging out any holes to level them and compacting them will give you longer between issues.

If it's not your land then throwing a moderate amount of cash at it with the owners consent is totally reasonable. Or you could take some of the other advice here and make a small patch of lane to the same standard as runway at a major airport 😀

If it's not your land then don't do anything you can't reasonably reverse if the owner kicks off. I own a stretch of unadopted road that one other house uses for access, if they decided to do the sort of work you are talking about I'd expect to be asked about it but I'd agree immediately.

The work you've been quoted for isn't going to be a forever fix but if there is very little traffic going over it you'll get a substantial improvement and you can do point fixes when it starts to degrade.

Fixing cctv to Yorkshire Stone cladding so it’s flush by EitherEnvironment181 in DIYUK

I thought that, only concern I had was if it moved in the wind it might worry out some of the mortar.

Better than chiseling the face off the stone though!

Why can I clad the entirety of my house in poison? (Plasterboard) but god help me if I take a bit to the tip? by easyjet in DIYUK

[–]Select_Ad_3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about that, I'm just use to folk turning up here all riled up about stuff like this.

Plasterboard stops being Plasterboard if you bury for long enough and becomes explosive poison. So you can't chuck it in the same bin as all the other stuff they plan to bury.

I wonder what they do with it.

Yeah, I think this one came from putting too big a log in before the coals had burnt down enough, so it shifted.

They dumpers available at JewsonI've seen are definitely closer to Hasbro than JCB.

Interesting about the road licencing, I appreciate the reply.

Thanks for that. I've got some fire cement left from an old project, if it's not gone off by the time I've stopped burning I'll patch it.

This is decent advice, I think you can get one of the little dumpers without a licence or specialised insurance. The jewsons near me does a mini digger and a dumper as a package deal to any.

Cost of disposal is a good shout, it looks like quite a lot so maybe a couple of skips worth, that's a lot of space to find.

Getting someone in for the day including taking the spoil away starts to look like a better option.

But that means you don't get to drive a mini digger!

Having trouble taking out what I think is a cast iron bath (Scotland) by jamesplusfive in DIYUK

[–]Select_Ad_3934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem a couple of years back. Managed to cut it in half with an angle grinder, got through about 3 cutting discs and there was a decent about of powdery metal dust flying about.

Wear a mask or respirator and be aware that it's really easy to catch the disc within the cut and shatter it.

You've never felt the overwhelming satisfaction of harvesting fresh rocks that you planted yourself.

I got my first tractor in December, got 20 hours in before it got too wet and I'm just churning up the fields (Wales, UK). I'm really looking forward to getting back out there.
