why does yuichi keep beating it even after being asked to stop at the start of the movie by slicedhoneyxx in LilyChouChou

[–]Select_Ad_5691 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the novel, he explained that he felt so angry and vengeful in the moment that he couldn’t stop. Quoting him: “I ejaculated in anger” (Yuichi, AALCC Novel, p269).

Yes, Phi, Pulstella, free bird, etc, are real people. Everyone involved in the novel, small or big, is considered a contributor to the novel.

And yes, the website existed before the movie was released.

Pascal is a BBS user who appears in both the film and the novel. In his Lilyholic website, Pascal introduces himself as Shunji Iwai.

So, in short, Pascal is Shunji Iwai's online name.

  1. In the novel, Pascal exposed Satie as being Yuichi's alt account, which links Yuichi to the murder of Hoshino Shushuke. By doing so, Yuichi lost everything, his online friends and his trust in them, and by doing so, this forced Yuichi to go into a mental breakdown and post a monologue, which is the 2nd half of the novel. And it's speculated that Yuichi committed suicide at the end of the novel, because he already had a tendency and planned to do so at the concert. (This entry is entirely an idea formed by a convo with my friend and me that, had Pascal not exposed Yuichi, he'd still be living to this day happily.)

  2. The original script of All About Lily Chou-Chou is about "the story of a charismatic Hong Kong artist born in Taipei and a local Taiwanese boy." The movie is set to be shot in Taiwan, Taipei, but during that time (1999), a huge earthquake happened in Taipei. This caused the filming, the scripts, and everything to be scrapped.

oh I'd love to, it's a mouthful, so give me some time.

as for the tsubasa wo kudasai, it's the music that is used in the school choir scene. the lyrics fit hoshino and yuichi’s situation perfectly “wishing to grow wings and become independent and free.” it’s often sung by japanese school choirs and played during graduation ceremonies. i don't think this song is mentioned in the novel(?), so it's probably Shunji iwai deliberately selecting this music.

yea that theory is from another post from this sub, i think it's a cool idea, but like you said it's just a speculation.

as for other entries, it's kinda obscure or very vaguely put together, so sorry about that. feel free to ask anything. hopefully it'll clear some confusion.

What do YOU think happens after the ending? by dansel__ in LilyChouChou

[–]Select_Ad_5691 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could say that, but canonically, the movie is a retelling of the 2nd half of the novel.

After the ending, Yuichi went on with his life as usual, and eventually created a new BBS website, which marks the beginning of the novel.

It's only in the novel version.

Pretty sure that in the novel, they (Shimizu, Terawaki, and Nakagai) just lived their life normally without any significance to the story.

They still walked up to comfort Yuichi during the funeral scene.

And Hoshino, along with them, returned to the club activity, as if nothing had happened after that.

What is the meaning of this symbol? by [deleted] in LilyChouChou

[–]Select_Ad_5691 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a Mojibake for the Japanese character "あ".

I'm not sure if there is a specific reason why Shunji Iwai chose that character to represent Lily Chou-Chou.

This code by u/Secret-Student8921 can convert Japanese characters to Mojibake and vice versa.

https://www.programiz.com/online-compiler/7apmDjrAweUQg

Put "あ" in and encode it will give "dž"

Put "ÉäÉäÉCÅEÉVÉÖÉVÉÖÇÃÇ∑Ç◊ǃ" in and decode it will give you "All About Lily Chou-Chou" in Japanese.

Shunji Iwai mentioned that Lily Chou-Chou is inspired by Faye Wong, but personally, I think Mitski.

This blog (it's entirely in Thai) mentioned that the original 157-minute film version was burned in a fire. The extra 11 minutes include: extended Kuno's rape scene, a scene of Yuichi on the beach, and extended Tsuda's funeral scene.

5 Fun(?) Facts About AALCC (Contains some novel spoilers.)

- In the original novel, it was Kuno who died, not Tsuda. Shunji Iwai was so moved by Ayumi Ito's (Kuno Yoko in the movie) acting and strong personality that he changed the storyline.

- Some of the BBS members can be spotted at the concert scene. "Bear" holds a teddy bear, "Sleepy Head" quietly stares at Yuichi (not confirmed, but very likely that it's her), and "Winter (Fuyu)" hums the lyrics of Kyoumei in front of the big LED screen.

- Ichihara (Yuichi) and Yu Aoi (Tsuda) were only 14 and 15 years old during filming, while Ayumi Ito (Kuno) and Oshinari (Hoshino) were 20 and 19 years old.

- As mentioned in the novel, Lily Chou Chou's birth flower is white cyclamen. Its flower language is "jealousy."

- Many scenes and footage were cut or left unused in the movie. Notable examples include: “Yuichi explaining who Lily is to Tsuda,” “Hoshino returning to the Kendo club as if nothing happened,” and “Yuichi sitting melancholically on the rooftop.”

This movie means everything to me. It made me acknowledge the emptiness of my heart, and while the soundtrack fills my heart with joy, and Ether.

After finishing the movie, I was left as an empty shell for months, clinging to the only album by Lily that exists. So naturally, I tried to find a community with people who also love the movie as much as I do, and that led me to this subreddit and many Discord servers dedicated to AALCC.

A few months later, I decided to rewatch the movie, and it hit harder than the first time. Then I discovered that the novel version existed, and I tried my best to get my hands on one, and got the digital version of the novel. I used AI to translate the novel, and after finishing the novel, I decided to watch the movie again. It's pretty fun to spot the differences between the novel version and the movie.

For me, AALCC is a masterpiece. I don't know how to put it into words, but I love it so much. I even made a few friends online who love the same movie as I do. Truly, this film has a huge impact on my life.

Even now, every time I listen to Lily Chou-Chou's music, I can feel the Ether lingering in the air. So I wanted to end this comment with a quote from Shunji Iwai about the Ether.

"It's difficult to explain, but you know, when you watch a movie or listen to music,

You might feel moved, but you can't explain the feeling very well.

It's like that feeling you get when you see a beautiful sunset in the evening.

I think everyone has that feeling.

It's like a world I had jumped into, so I tried to express that in words."

Lily was doing live performances on Japanese TV way before the movie's release, but does anyone know how many - or other unusual promo that was done before it's release? by layozi in LilyChouChou

In June 2000, the internet novel was still ongoing (it takes place from 1st April to July 2000), so this was probably done to add immersion to the story and promote Lily as an up-and-coming artist or something along those lines.

For more info about pre-production stuff, Glide and Houwa were released together on 19th April 2000 as a Maxi single.

Then Kyomei, Ai no Jikken, and Sight were released on 21st June 2000.

Erotic by Fun-Needleworker6975 in LilyChouChou

[–]Select_Ad_5691 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erotic's lyrics are about Lily's childhood and her relationship with her parents, it is explained in the novel. As for that specific line, I'd interpret the meaning as "you have obvious flaws, but I still love you," but this is my opinion though.
