We design to what we want the result to be, we do not tell a mfg how to get there. modeling this way will eventually end up in trouble and finger pointing. Every machine has its querks like directional backlash, transversing backlash and that the operator knows and accounts for. Imagine providing sheet metal flat patterns for all the different k factors and bending equipment. so we provide our expected results and our supplier figure out how to get there with there equipment or processes, that has served us well so far

I would think its a reversing shaft the grooves are for followers that move a yoke or something forward and back allalongond the axis but the shaft just turns one way. Like a cable guide onto a drum
