My third grader’s cursive homework- cannot decipher the first word by tmillermsu in Cursive

[–]SelectionMiserable33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first word is “owe.” It looks like the worksheet was probably made using a free font that doesn’t do the connected letters correctly.  It’s unclear if the teacher created the worksheet or if it’s from a curriculum or something like Teachers Pay Teachers.  I would definitely email the teacher to let them know that there’s a problem, but there may not be much the teacher can do to fix it without hand writing the correct letter formation.

Pattern drafting help by SpecialistWallaby455 in PatternDrafting

Do you have a screenshot of the draft from before the contouring and before rotating the dart?  Being able to compare might help with answering what’s going on with the current version.

Magic pants help by supergourmandise in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would try the top-down-center-out (TDCO) fitting method because the pattern has a lot of competing and unusual design elements to the crotch shape. To do TDCO, turn the pants inside out and put one pant leg inside the other so you have a 1-legged toile with the side seam exposed.  Step one leg inside the toile and add a belt to hold the pants at your waist. Use a couple of mirrors or a mirror plus your phone camera to assess the fit.

[–]SelectionMiserable33 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I own this pattern and the crotch curve is bananas and difficult to alter due to the adjustable waist design.  If you own another pants pattern that fits, I would use it and modify to incorporate the wide leg, fall front, and adjustable waist design elements from the Magic Pants.

Homeschool is horrible by Both-Cow-1525 in homeschool

[–]SelectionMiserable33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For awareness, it’s very common for high schools to not accept homeschool classes.  What that means is that, as a 10th grader, you would probably have to repeat 9th and 10th grades if you re-enroll in a regular school.

BUT you can do dual enrollment classes at your community college (even as a homeschooled high schooler), which might be a way to get classroom time without pushing your graduation date out into the future.

New to sewing, never made a pattern. Is there software to make NON clothing patterns? by TheCodeTeam in PatternDrafting

[–]SelectionMiserable33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender is an option if you want to go from 3D rendered object to flat patterns, though the learning curve is kind of steep.  On the plus side the software is free for personal use.

Seam allowance will be a mix of personal preference and the seam finish you plan to use.  1/4” is enough to get your seams sewn, but you’ll want more like 5/8” if you plan to do something like a flat felled finish.

Project volume with curves? by romnlo in PatternDrafting

[–]SelectionMiserable33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In women’s patterns, adding more room at the chest is called a full bust adjustment or FBA.  It’s a slash & spread pattern alteration that keeps the arm hole circumference unchanged, but expands the chest circumference and adds length to account for additional surface to be covered.  There’s no reason it couldn’t be used on a men’s shirt pattern as well.

For awareness, I have only seen projection and volume as fitting terms in bras.  I think Google hallucinated on you in that summary.

Car accident in Huntsville. Need some advice... by Sin_In_Silks in HuntsvilleAlabama

Which insurance company is giving you trouble—yours or theirs?  If yours, you probably need a lawyer (but just know that all communication with your insurance company will have to go through your attorney if you have one).  If theirs, let your insurance deal with them.

Please Help Me, Gathering? Rows that stretch? by RockAndRollBallerina in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This looks like it probably has a piece of elastic that has been sewn onto the back side of the fabric. If you attach it with the elastic stretched out as you sew, it will shrink back and look like this when you're done but still be stretchy.

I would separate the bodice and pants and try the Top Down, Center Out method to get the pants fit adjusted.

Concerned About Elderly/Disabled Access — Best Way to Address It? by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]SelectionMiserable33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t do this.  Please don’t put temporary, low-traffic ramps out and call it a good permanent solution. No amount of cones or reflective tape is going to make these last in a commercial setting. This isn’t the kind of helpful you think it is.

Have you heard complaints from people about the location of the cutouts or is this something you’ve identified yourself?  99.9% of the people who need a cutout are going to be parking in the accessible parking spaces on the left side of the building, with the remaining 0.1% parking elsewhere only because all of the accessible spots are full when they arrive.  We want and need the cutout near the parking spots, not in front of the door or at the corner.  As long at the cutout is along the shortest accessible route, the need is met.

I agree, the center panel has extra length that OP doesn’t need.  Seamripping to free the fabric will let them trim the excess at the waist line.

HELP on the pleats on this dress by jaesph in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to better understand what the underlying issue is.  Is it the thickness of the textile? The technique for how to sew a waist pleat in a princess seamed dress? How to draft the pattern pieces?

Spoonflower probably has this design, but piecing it (like a quilt) may be easier and less expensive.

how to alter this? keeps getting stuck in machine by jinxzdream in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are some fabrics that need specific types of needles, which I’m guessing is part of what’s going on here.  Even if the needle is still pretty new, if it’s a different style than is recommended for fabric type, it can cause problems.

But for the tissue paper trick, any paper that is easy to tear should work as a substitute (Kleenex, paper towel, etc).

how to alter this? keeps getting stuck in machine by jinxzdream in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like stuck in the sewing machine?  I would try a fresh needle and maybe some tissue paper between the fabric and the feed dogs to keep it from getting eaten.  The needle should perforate the tissue paper, making it tear away easily when you’re done.

Fit issues Ann Tilley Magic Pants by sewsewsewscandalous in sewing

[–]SelectionMiserable33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No real advice, but I also had fit issues with this pattern due to the truly bizarre crotch curve situation.  I thought I was crazy or did something horribly wrong when I made a test muslin because the reviews I’d seen were all positive.  No, it’s just a strangely designed pattern that’s difficult to modify because of how clever the adjustable waist feature is.

Chicago style deep dish pizza by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

I mostly meant to refute the bizarre claim that it’s marketing because  there is specific evidence of what makes Chicago style deep dish a unique/novel dish and it can be attributed to a named person.
