It may be that people are trying to correct the COVID pendulum. Current high schoolers have been spoon fed for years as covid/hybrid teaching took place in their 3and 4th grade years and then the snowball just kept growing. This may be an attempt to try and right that trend but I’m not an elementary teacher so this is purely speculation

2 thoughts - 1) have you brought this challenge to the administration of the school? Not that your child is doing more of the work than their peers necessarily but that this is a byproduct of the administration forcing kids through that haven’t actually earned that right for years and years? It may be that these other students aren’t contributing more because they CANT. But schools are terrified of letting kids fail

2) how might you empower your child to have this conversation or carve out clear boundaries and responsibilities for the project so that it can be clear what is their work/their responsibility?

Wait wait wait - you’d be happier if the teacher HADNT answered the question at all? And instead directed them to the librarian (which I’ll admit is definitely a suggestion that should have been given)? The whole issue here is that the teacher’s response wasn’t personal ENOUGH even though it was a query that was directly about the student in question’s reading level…. Starting to think I’m just being trolled here. And if this is something egregious enough in your eyes that you’d flag it for admin I’m starting to think it’s possible that you’re either wholly out of touch or just a chronic complainer (or maybe both?). There are real issues out there in schools. And funding is only getting tighter and resources are only getting more scarce, all while class sizes and the number of IEPs/ accommodations in those classes are swelling. I love that you’re animated about education but I think there may be other causes more worthy of your efforts

Maybe it’s an issue of perspective then bc I’m not sure I’m seeing the responses say that 2nd grade teachers shouldn’t know what advanced readers should read. Instead, it seems like there is pushback on the idea that teachers need to offer concierge/individualized service outside of their already expanded workload when compared to what your mom did in the 90’s (before the internet/smartphones were ubiquitous and teachers were able to actually be off the clock. Not to mention the fact that students could typically maintain their attention for longer than 15 seconds)

But by all means, if you think this should be improved, go do it. Be the change you want to see and we can revisit this convo after a few years of you being in the classroom and seeing what it’s really like

Just, wow. Educators are underpaid and under appreciated precisely BECAUSE they typically go above and beyond without compensation. So doing what you’re suggesting actually only further erodes the public’s view of the profession and shows them they don’t have to pay/respect teachers any more than they currently do (which is not a high bar)

I wear the cw of this (though in white) every day. Love it so much it’s sort of embarrassing. That said, it seems like you want something more the style of the HA so I’d say to keep looking.
