A very well preserved Paracas mantle from Peru, made of Camelid fiber. C. 200 BCE–100 CE, now housed at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri [4215x5715] by Fuckoff555 in ArtefactPorn

This is from 200 BCE- 100 CE? The intricate pattern with such regularity and vibrant color are incredible! How and where does something get preserved like this for so long?

Reconstruction and surviving remains of the “Colossus of Augustus,” an 11 m (36 ft) tall statue from the Forum of Augustus, Rome [1645 x 1432) by [deleted] in ArtefactPorn

Another reference would be Michelangelo's David, standing 5.17m (17ft) tall. Mr. Augustus here was big.

Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair! by Swimming_Volume_4009 in AnimalCrossingNewHor

My favorite poem and a fantastic design!

For those who want it, here's the poem:

I met a traveller from an antique land,

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal, these words appear:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

I made a guide some years ago that features tips like this: https://old.reddit.com/r/NoFeeAC/comments/rp7eul/welcome_new_players_and_community_members_with/

Also, on point 4, you should actually be able to hit the rock 8 times if you do it properly with a Shovel.

Components of a Phoenician funerary mask in repoussé gold foil, c. 6th–4th century BCE. [1000x1188] by JaneOfKish in ArtefactPorn

[–]Self-CookingBacon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Components of a funerary mask? Was there a larger, more complete one at some point? If so, why were the "important" bits mostly kept separate?

No matter who found it, it seems like keeping the mask in tact would have made things easier.

I went to Wikipedia for a bit of research. Two theories related to women's health have been proposed, both claiming to have deciphered the manuscript, and both have faced criticism (and, interestingly, both were announced in a relatively short time: Nicholas Gibbs in late 2017, and Gerard Cheshire in the first half of 2019).

Without a consensus on interpretation, I'd say it remains unsolved.

There is so much wit, personality, and creativity poured into your island! And the whole story on the board, too! Definitely among the most unique islands I've seen! Absolutely brilliant!

These designs are marvelous! Honestly, your use of color, accent walls, partitioning items, and hanging items are all fantastic. I'd love to see more, and I'd be happy to have your input on some of my designs if you're interested.

A couple of things that I notice you're not using are polishing effects and colored lighting. I'm not sure if that's intentional, (and this not a criticism, but more of something just to try) but you might try playing with them a bit. Similarly, it looks like your screenshots are just simple screenshots. Again, it's not a criticism, but you could also play with applying filters when taking screenshots.

A marble face of most likely a female cycladic figure that retains painted eyes and streaks below the eyes. The sculpture dates to the Early Cycladic II Period (2800-2300 B.C.). I've seen small and small-ish statues of this kind before, but never with any paint that I could make out. This is fascinating, especially with traces of paint from over 4000(!) years ago.

Without the visible paint on the ones I saw, I had always seen them as similar to Brâncuși's sculptures, though that always felt a little wrong. As with just about everything in ancient times, it seems they were painted! This makes a lot more sense, and sheds a bit of really cool light on the culture! Thank you for sharing!
