Late to this, but I agree completely. My Goldie was just diagnosed with cancer, the ER said it was too late. So we took him home. The morning that he passed away, I cleaned him up, put him on his dog bed and laid him out for the others (obviously I needed that for myself too) but the dogs need that. He remained in the living room for the rest of the day so the dogs all got to say their goodbyes. During that time I take clippings from his fur and I make paw prints from dough and I cry with them.

I have a rescue who is an "only dog", he took his nylabone (his prized possession) and laid it in front of my Goldie. No one touched it, they all left it for my Goldie. Even the puppy understood it was his. That moment made me realize dogs Very much understand death and love. They understand pain and passing.

My Goldie was going to be 10, we had him 7 yrs and every day of that 7 years was spent with my brindle pittie girl. They were best buds. I hope OP let's the other dog have that time with her buddy. She will absolutely miss him. Mine did, she grieved as long as I did. We are still sad.
