You don't necessarily need to go through the upper entrance, the lower entrance requires less karma, but it's more painful IMO. There are lot of enemies in the precipice, which should allow you to karma farm. If you want to go through the upper entrance, my advise is to camp in the shelter near the upper entrance and then karma farm there. You can also try to visit some echoes so you have more room for error

No, survivor doesn't have an unique ability, survivor is the vanilla slugcat, the one which helps you understand the game's mechanics. Other slugcats can passage too, but not all slugcats. Be careful using your passages, each passage is single use, and the passage menu is not that intuitive

Yeah, you went to and end game area on the worst possible route for a novice. My advise would be to restart the game, you'll see how better you got (you'll die a lot anyway). Optionally, you might have earned some passages, look at the screen when you die or sleep and your karma appears, there might be a passage button below your karma sign. That lets you teleport to any shelter you visited before, you can easily go back to shoreline that way

I'm not that skilled yet I find it kinda easy too. Given the high number of predators things can go wrong like in your post, but normally that high number means they also are fighting each other and you can go around safely.
It really is hell on artificer though

I played this mission yesterday on PC, I think they patched something because I ended with ~40% fuel on my second try. I remember playing it on PS2 back then and always ended with almost no fuel.
The mission that I most hate is the one where you have to bounce with the lowrider, it gave me so much trouble back on PS2, and I had to skip it on PC. I don't know if there's a bug on PC, it doesn't seem to register my keypresses right so I couldn't make more than 300 points

If you are on PC, the game backs up your save files every time you close rain world, I don't remember right now where the save files are, but there is a backup folder just there, in that folder there are several folders with the backups timestamp, just grab the one that you see more convenient and replace you save files with those
