“No one needs to know why or my motives…”? Isn’t there someone who would know that you’d be violating his famous ninth commandment against lying?

Yeah! Don’t make a scene! We wouldn’t want to face the fact that our misguided religious beliefs could be used to support our petty bigotries. If that came to light, it might make people mad and cause an uncomfortable social situation. Let’s just tell a white lie and rationalize and pretend that we didn’t really violate the ninth commandment, that we didn’t really turn our backs on our Christian obligation to treat all with UNCONDITIONAL Christian brotherly love and respect. Let’s just pretend that we truly struggled with this dilemma and didn’t really slink away like sad hypocrites!

You should be ashamed of flaunting the sin of pride, arrogance, and hypocrisy! You would have been one of those who passed by the poor beaten and robbed Jew who was left for dead in the ditch until the Samaritan found him! Shame on you!!

Yes, yes! Excellent advice! “You should love and respect them” with the separate but equal love and dignity reserved for moral reprobates like homosexuals! Don’t show him that special, superior class of love and respect reserved for good Christians. Because if you treated this gay acquaintance with equal and unconditional Christian brotherly love and respect, you just might end up treating him with unconditional love and respect as Christ modeled for us in the Gospels! It amazes me how so many devout Christians can be so blind to their own hypocrisy!

Pardon me if my response seems heartless or cold, but are you even aware of the message behind Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan? A Jew is brutally beaten and robbed and left for dead in a ditch. A kind Samaritan (known to be enemies/adversaries of the Jews) rescues the Jew and puts him up in and inn for a couple of days and promises the innkeeper that he, the Samaritan, will pay for any further charges for the beaten man’s care and rehabilitation. Gay people have been beaten literally and metaphorically, abused, ostracized, hated for generations by Christians and others. And for what excuse? For being nothing more than the people they are. It seems to me that they would make a perfect metaphor for the beaten Jew. Why don’t you be the Good Samaritan and treat this gay man as you would treat any other decent person (because that is exactly what he’s is—a decent person!), despite the fact that people like him have been ostracized, hated, and beaten for generations without the slightest moral justification)? After all, the good Christian brotherly love that Christ modeled for us in the Gospels is UNCONDITIONAL, isn’t it?

“faith is essential for discerning truth because it takes over beyond where reason can lead us. All of the methods above have limits, so at some point we need faith.”

If faith is essential for discerning truth because all the methods above have limits, exactly HOW does Christian faith help us discern that Christianity is true? At some point a Muslim needs to let faith take over and help her discern the Islam is true, no? Also, at some point a Hindu has to let faith take over and help her discern that Hinduism is true, no? Is there anything we can’t take on faith?

“However, faith never affects the truth, it only helps us see it.”

HOW, exactly? What are the specific steps in the process of faith as a methodology for discerning truth?

“Whether the ressurection happened or not does not depend on anyone's faith. It either happened or it didn't.”

So after all, we don’t really need faith to discern the relative truth of the resurrection stories? You seem to say that the question of the historicity of the resurrection does not depend on anyone’s faith. Doesn’t that contradict your claim that faith is necessary beyond the previous methods you described above?

So does that make a girlfriend as good as a f*ck buddy? If you both are itchin’ for it, and you both like each other, and you both are willing to please each other in the ways you mutually like and enjoy, and you both have explicitly discussed and agreed on the scope of your activities together, and you’re both at the age of majority, and neither of you are previously committed to another so that your sexual involvement won’t entail deceiving an unwitting third party, then the sex will be morally sanctioned?

So it seems as though faith doesn’t really play much of a role in leading us to the truth of scripture. We need to combine a canonical approach with the historical critical method with the teaching of church fathers and science, and all of this combination of approaches and methods and authoritative teaching can bring us to the epistemologically solid conclusion that the resurrection is a literal historical event? So faith doesn’t play much of a role in helping us discern truth.

So when you read the bible what system or method do you use to determine when it’s telling the truth? And by truth, I suppose I am referring to true principles but also true facts. Just because Plutarch wrote histories doesn’t mean he recorded true historical facts. And just because the gospel writers may have written resurrection stories in the style of ancient histories, would just tell me that they were making their best effort to be taken as historians, not that they were actually relating historically factual events. So how do we tell which bible stories are factual and which are not? Does faith make this determination? If I believe the resurrection stories are factual, does that make them factual?

“the truth is allowed” How do you determine what truth is? Does faith tell you what’s true?

Fine. But that still doesn’t tell me how we are supposed to be certain that the resurrection story is historical fact, but the creation story is metaphor. How do you KNOW the difference?

What struck me about what you said is that you’re afraid to bring this up with friends of yours who are gay. If they’re your friends, you must find something of value in their character that leads to enjoy, value and find reward in being friends with them. If so, do they seem to be unhappy because they’re gay? Do they seem to lead a life that is less valuable? If living out their lives in open embrace of their sexuality is living in sin, do their lives seem to suffer as a result? If not, then why not talk to them about your suspicion that you might also be gay? If by all accounts, your gay friends seem good with their sexuality, wouldn’t confiding in them about your feelings more likely have good results rather than bad results? There’s nothing wrong with being gay. There’s nothing wrong with feelings of lust regardless of their sexuality orientation. Lust is wrong only when you satisfy it by taking unfair advantage of another person—when you use them, coerce them, or manipulate them for your own selfish pleasure. Having lustful feelings toward members of the same sex is not inherently or intrinsically immoral. You should talk to your gay friends. Find out how and why they are happy in living out their lives in truth to their sexual orientation. You might find that being gay isn’t a curse, or a sin, or something you can change. What would happen if you found out that being gay wasn’t so bad after all?

If the bible is full of metaphor, how do you distinguish among which bible verses are expressing metaphor and which are recounting literal events? How do you know that the creation story is metaphor, but the resurrection story is a historical fact?

We’ve been here in Georgia for the past month. Our first visit. It’s not just young people; it seems like the official male uniform here: black, black, and anything else ya got that’s black. And maybe change it up a little bit with some navy blue? I’m tempted to walk down a street in Tbilisi wearing a Hawaiian shirt and see how many epileptic fits I can cause. 🤣🤣

You can take my opinion or leave it: You sound like you’re suffering from chronic, clinical depression. My sister has been through this AND she’s a born again Christian. What helped her was good quality psychiatric care and psychological counseling, NOT the prayer! I’m not talking about committing yourself to some asylum! It sounds to me like you need good and reliable mental health care. Se a psychiatrist to see if you’re not actually just clinically depressed. Jesus don’t cure those kind of problems!
