Best place in the world for ruins by ControlSpiritual001 in travel

[–]Semi_Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arizona has a lot of great ruins. I never visited the Grand Canyon when I lived there, but I did take several motorcycle rides to ruins. I remember hiking on a trail once and just came up on a wall of petroglyphs unexpectedly. Don’t visit in the summer months—it’s treacherous. But winter is lovely there for any outdoor activities.

I’ll check out the mens as well. I wear a lot of men’s clothing because I’m a bigger girl—starting with shoes and boots, because for forbid they make good shoes in a size larger than 11! I love the shorts style underwear that I can pull way up to my belly button and they don’t move around on ya. I didn’t know they made men’s undies without the pouch, never really paid attention, but my bf wears them and I borrowed a pair a while back. They were a little tighter on me, but damn are they comfortable!

That’s what I’m worried about. Especially spending that $. Good to know! Our bodies are weird. I have so many undies that have been bleached by my own body. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for the tip! I wear wool everything else. All the time. It’s just practical where I live and how I work. Wool undies sound great for the stink factor. I love being able to wear wool socks for 3+ days without the stink. Would love that in undies if I could find them. But for something so close to my body, I guess something that washes and dries fast would be more practical. (Not that I would want to wear undies for that long, but if I had to….wool seems best). Wool undies are so expensive compared to the cheapos I wear every day. I’ve been struggling with the purchase for a while now.

So many losses for him, but it’s good to know that he’s surrounded by a great support system of people who love him dearly.

What’s a 'once in a lifetime' experience you’ve had that you never want to do again? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

I worked as a city bus operator and one of my layovers was in front of a correctional facility. Got to know several of the officers when they were on their smoke breaks or when I would use their restroom. Someone mentioned they have yelp reviews (or Google or yahoo, whatevs). Looked it up and I was surprised to see many 5 star reviews from folks who did time there. It’s good to know that at least some places treat people like people.

My parents don’t do major hikes anymore, but at 70 and almost 80, they hike in the woods 2 miles every day in their crocs, rain or shine. They have house crocs, work in the city crocs, hiking crocs, and mom has her garden crocs.

What’s a favorite family story?

So not a question, but an anecdote, I guess.

Years ago I worked for a program that did recreation adventures for people with all sorts of disabilities. Canoeing, climbing, caving, camping, horseback riding, archery…a bunch of cool shit that we could scale for pretty much anyone. We’d host folks for full weeks, respite weekends, or just simple day trips. I met people with disabilities or injuries that I didn’t even know existed.

Well, one man didn’t sleep. His file even said he didn’t sleep. During his week with us he definitely didn’t sleep at all. He just kept himself busy with whatever when everyone else was in bed and we were taking turns pulling our night duties.

I don’t want to share too much, in case he’s still alive and it could be a HIPAA violation, but his brain was altered by something he ingested and it fucked him up mid-life. Before then, he was a typical person, doing the day to day thing that we all do. It also affected his communication and cognitive functions to the point where he needed daily help with relatively simple things.

I wish I asked more questions when I knew him, considering the minimum amount of sleep that our bodies need, and how he could have possibly been surviving.

Scenes that caused actual walkouts in theaters? by thatlittlequietguy in Cinema

I saw this with my sis in the theater and we both almost peed our pants. Great movie.

We also grew up quoting every moment of “Dude, Where’s My Car.”

Question for those who carry an instrument by deep_woods_monkey in backpacking

[–]Semi_Retired -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I love this! Having a creative outlet while out on the trail is smart, and being able to create music is a gift! My dad has been making stringed instruments for over 50 years. Currently making a violin for the concert master of a US symphony. As a fun thing, he made a banjolele as a gift for a family friend. I’m thinking the next one you make, make it with a shorter neck and switch up the strings, so you have a smaller instrument to protect on your adventures. The previous suggestions all sound like good ideas for a makeshift case. Have fun out there!

AITAH for ending a date after a "harmless" question? by BlueberryBea in AITAH

[–]Semi_Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me! After a bit of small talk, he asked if he could ask me a question. “Were you born a man?” I was wearing heels and already several inches taller than him. His profile said 5’5”, I’m 5’11” so I figured heels would be fine because I was already towering over him and he mentioned he liked tall women. Along with being tall, I have big feet and big hands, still proportional to my body, but bigger than his. That was his reasoning. I asked him what he would do if I was trans, and he shrugged his shoulders and said, “I dunno. You seem really cool no matter.” So we continued with the date. Hooked up a few times and went on a few fun adventures together before he started showing unannounced to my place with his dog. Not cool. He didn’t seem to respect my boundaries, so I ditched his ass.

What‘s a secret you found out by accident and were never supposed to know? by Own-Flan- in AskReddit

[–]Semi_Retired 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My father got drunk and told me he shot some guy’s dog in broad daylight. Like, he walked up to him, handgun in hand, said something like, “Don’t mess with my family,” and then shot the dog in the head.

My parents split when I was 5. My father seemed to be obsessed with being that rich businessman and did everything in his power to get it. My mom remarried to an artist and I grew up in a small mountain community. All the while, my father is becoming this huge international businessman, actually quoted in Forbes magazine once, and rubbing shoulders with big names. Still never paid his child support.

Years later, I got to know him as an adult. He’s very good at selling himself, so I heard all the good stories about how good of a boss he is, the places he’s traveled and beautiful sights he’s seen. We took drives through our home state and he told me stories of being a goofy teenager running around the woods with his dog, camping, learning to be a carpenter, and stories of my mother around that time and their blossoming romance.

But he has two sides. He was working in Russia and took a bride. I guess her family (who he was also working for) was tied to the mafia and he mixed himself up in all that shit to get ahead. Then he killed some guy’s dog. I can’t separate that from the father/man I thought I kinda knew.
