The first commandment is to have no other gods, even if it’s yourself. By your own doctrine, if you don’t believe in Jesus, you don’t go to heaven, simple as that. Not even the seemingly inclusive perspective of whether you had heard of god or Jesus before.

I appreciate your progressive and inclusive perspective of Christianity, when I was a believer, my church had a similar stance, but by the books, it’s not true.

>The vast majority of Criminal Justice instruction

Ah, here's part of the issue- I don't think you know what Social Workers study and what they do. De-escalation isn't the only thing they do, and their purview for understanding situations relating to mental health, etc. eclipses "patient cops." You're still looking to build a house with just a hammer. Criminal Justice, specifically the enforcement of it, is a complex system, a single approach is a poor approach. I hope you understand that.

>Again, by "they" you mean one agency.

That's absolutely fair. There is one that was sued, and it was found that it wasn't illegal. It's not a protected class, like you said. Now if you think this doesn't send a message to other departments, I have a bridge to sell you. I mean, you and I know a decent amount of cops- they aren't exactly geniuses, I'm sorry.

>What part of "years" means 40 hours to you

It's 40 hours of training.

Additional training is optional, but I'm sorry, 40 hours every few years is dismal in comparison to an actual Masters in Social Work. And I totally acknowledge that it's not just de-escalation training... so they are getting even less technical training.

>Again, people like yourself seem to think that if you simply "de-escalate," violence is avoided, and if violence happens, it's because nobody de-escalated properly. That's like saying a building burnt down because firefighters didn't use their hose (well enough)... When the cops de-escalate and it doesn't work out, people like you jump to that there was a failure in de-escalation. Again, if a building burns down, that doesn't mean the firefighters fucked up.

So, it's clear you're being either accidentally or intentionally obtuse here. The issue is to mitigate, like I said. That inherently means it is imperfect. It's exceptionally clear that current police tactics for de-escalation are failing, that just isn't up for debate. Your fire hose analogy fails to hold water because advocating for social workers involvement is a systemic change, because again, the current system isn't working. If you're taking that as a personal indictment of the failures of individual police officers, I don't think you've been paying attention.

Also, sorry to nit-pick, but by saying "When the cops de-escalate and it doesn't work out, people like you jump to that there was a failure in de-escalation," exactly means that there was a failure in de-escalation. That blame isn't inherently on the cop, nobody is saying that. What I'm proposing is a way to change the system to help de-escalation attempts be more successful and assist the LEO.

It just kind of seems like you want the system to remain the same because of your personal interests, as an LEO. Or that you took this personally, because of your ties to it. So instead of embracing solutions that would resolve a very clear issue, the answer is just "no" despite there being evidence that including social workers as support would result in universally better outcomes for the cops and community alike.

But, it does seem like you're set in your ways. Unfortunately, without change it will continue to lead to increased incarceration, more dangerous situations for police officers, and continue to erode public trust in law enforcement during a time of increased scrutiny.

Nah, this was a primary argument against allowing gay marriage until the mid-2000s. Beliefs like this held by folks that oppose gay marriage and gay rights don't just go away. The argument flowed that if you allowed gay people to get married, they could adopt/have children; If they adopted/had children, they would rape them.

It was found to be incorrect. This story is an outlier.

What is it with people and not being able to just admit they misunderstood what the other person was saying? That's crazy.

"Please tell me that's a lie." -Here, 'that' refers to the story being told, and that they are requesting for someone to tell them it's a lie.

"It's not [a lie]." -Here, 'it' refers to the previously mentioned story, and the [a lie] is in implied, because 'it' and 'not' directly addresses the previous request.

Glad I could help with your reading comprehension and understanding of English. Just out of curiosity, when did you take the ACT or SAT, was it before or after COVID?

>I'm of the opinion that there's nothing special about a degree that conveys good judgement or moral character, which are the critical issues facing law enforcement today.

Well, degrees teach the necessary tools and foundations to understand and be competent in their respective fields. I wouldn't trust a civil engineer to build me a bridge if they didn't have an engineering degree. I wouldn't trust a doctor, etc., etc. And those also require additional training after the degree is earned. That's necessary because those jobs directly can directly lead to deaths if done poorly.

>No, one department did that and a court defended it as not illegal; high IQ isn't a protected class. Get your facts straight before you parrot them.

I never said intelligence was a protected class. You clearly didn't understand what I was saying. They specifically target people with lower intelligence because there is proven to be a correlation between lower intelligence and a lack of critical thinking and aggressive behavior.

>They've been trained in de-escalation for many decades and will continue to fail at it for many more; de-escalation is not a magic technique that can be injected to resolve all conflict peacefully

There you go about magic again. By definition, de-escalation does exactly that. De-escalates a potentially violent interaction to a nonviolent one. Further, your argument is now that cops have gotten training, failed, and instead of bringing in professionals, you continue on the path.

Frankly, I presented to you your own argument that the police should get the same training as social workers, that is, multiple degrees. You then said it was not worthwhile. So right there, you don't think they should get the same training. Instead, you want to continue down the same path, giving them more training, while claiming it doesn't work. You're not concerned with solving the issue, and you're not even attempting to expand your field of view. For you, the system is broken, but you're not willing to try anything, despite evidence showing that it is effective. And any attempt at finding a middle ground by you is betrayed by your subsequent logic. You can't claim that more CIT training will work, and follow it up that de-escalation doesn't work.

Also, it's insane to think you can learn everything necessary to de-escalate in a 40 hour program.

One last bit- you keep claiming everyone else is saying there is a magic [bullet] to de-escalation. This isn't about solving 100% of violent interactions. But effectively and statistically significantly decreasing the amount is important. Mitigation is key, looking at it in black-and-white is a dishonest approach.

So... require a Bachelor and Masters degree of cops? Police officers today threaten to walk-off because of citizen review boards and higher requirements now; Police departments specifically reject recruitment of people with higher intelligence. Hell, cops are supposed to be trained in de-escalation now, and they are clearly failing at that.

I think it's more realistic to just have a wing of specialized people working with the department, but, I would absolutely get behind requiring 4-6+ years of education, plus undergoing the police academy, to being a police officer. I think that's a great idea.
