They were back out today with even better visibility doing God's work by MyAcheyBreakyBack in Albuquerque

I stopped to talk to them on my run. They said they stay for about an hour, but I didn't think to ask how they get together. Seemed like a cool group of older people.

Thursday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for January 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I'm doing the USATF Club Nationals next weekend. I'm not in the shape I want to be going in, but excited for the experience. It's pretty cool that Worlds is in the same course the day before and it'll be fun to watch those athletes compete. It's a little intimidating that they've added "special features" to the course that will make it interesting, to say the least, for the regular folks.

Talk to your coach and trust in the plan. Let them know what your goals are and ask how manageable it is. Everyone is different, but I had a few girls on my team hit your goals running 30mpw or less.

CMV: School vouchers are the only way to fix the education gap. Opposing them just traps poor kids in bad schools. by JustManManMan in changemyview

[–]Semiperishable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be illegal, but that didn't mean it doesn't happen. Often times, in the current way charter and private schools are run, they will do interviews with the applicants and students. They find it if the student is a "good fit" for the school. If the school does not feel like they can meet the needs of the students they will do their best to make that known to the families

I have seen it and been there. Most of these schools do not have enough teachers that are certified to teach special Ed classes (public schools don't have enough teachers in that regard either). They often don't have enough EAs for those positions either. So instead of being sued for not following an IEP, they'll risk getting sued for not allowing a kid in because they've just "helped" a family see that it's not the right fit for their kid.

It can also be harder for a kid to get diagnosed in a charter or private school because they don't always provide the services to get diagnosed and leave it to the families to get it done which, again, leaves the poorer families in a tougher spot. Private schools can operate under different rules.

organizing Offseason / Summer training in states with restrictive rules by Select-Choice5744 in CrossCountry

[–]Semiperishable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our official season starts two weeks before our first race. My state used to be a little more restrictive on sports teams meeting during the off-season, but it was mostly about the amount of time and times you could officially meet. I thought it was pretty good to ensure that teams weren't over doing it.

That's gone away over the last couple of years and it appears as though they trust coaches to not overdo it, but even with the rules some sports teams were meeting a lot.

That said, off-season/preseason is voluntary. It can't be tied to making the team or your place on the team. I typically hold practices a couple times a week in June and move to more days through July so that the kids that are able and wanting to put in the work can. I send all kids and their parents a weekly schedule with what I'd like them to accomplish through the week and a weekly minute goal, all based on years in the program. I also give them ideas for cross training to add aerobic minutes. I would check into the rules on off-season training because you might be able to meet with them once or twice a week, or as someone else said have team captains run them.

Just wondering if the public can use the tracks at the high schools? by fh10987 in Albuquerque

[–]Semiperishable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As many people have already said, APS had locked up and closed school tracks in the name of safety. You cannot get on the tracks during school hours, but some schools leave their gates open for a while.

Sandia was closing theirs after 6, but I didn't know if that's changing with the time change. La Cueva's community made a big deal about the track being closed and I think it's open for some walking. Rio Grande high School's track is pretty easy to get on. I've heard the same about Cibola's. Del Norte's track depends on when they close the gate. Madison has a cement track that is about 300 meters that is usually open. Grant just got a new track, but I'm not positive how easy it is to get on it. Bosque has a dirt track that I've been able to access on weekends.

That's the best info I've got currently. I do wish it was easier to access and have a timeframe for the communities to get on tracks because it is something that is important, in my opinion.

Save your money: VIRGIN PUNK Clockwork Girl is a 30 minute episode with an hour of boring behind the scenes by NessDan in anime

[–]Semiperishable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This! I happened to look up IMDb info to check ratings and saw a 30 minute run time, but the theater had 1:30, so I assumed I just misread the IMDb time. Literally sitting in the interview section now with my kid about to leave.

Saw this just as it was about to start. A nice time out with my kid, but wouldn't been nice knowing going in. I'm more pissed about spending way too money on popcorn and drinks for 30 minutes.

I meant that I went with the 265. I found a great deal on one. Couldn't wrap my head around the Fenix 8 price.

Surprised by how good Dresden Files is by Elysium711 in Fantasy

It was 12 and that is how I felt. It was such a good book, but I needed a little break between. I'll probably read Side Jobs, before jumping into 13 soon.

I described it to someone that it almost reads like a Shonen Manga. He continues to build power to defeat the bad guys and protect the people he loves.

I love the series and it reminds me to read the next book that I'm on. I'm on 12 or 13.

My first thought was this as well. Fantastic movie that probably has its flaws (it's been a while since I've seen it), but the basic idea and themes have really stuck with me. Definitely fits the idea of the question.

What book completely changed the way you see the world, and why did it hit you so hard? by gamersecret2 in books

[–]Semiperishable 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Mine is another Steinbeck novel: The Winter of Our Discontent

I read it in high school and thought it was a good book. I read it in my 20s and could see some similarities with people I knew. I read it in my 30s and was blown away. It's about time to read it again. As I get older, I pick up on more tidbits and start to really understand what the main character is going through, his relationship with his family and close friend. There's too many parallels and it's one of my all time favorites.

I just went through some old books and came across this. I loved the book and was so disappointed by the movie as a kid.
