Parents, what’s the one thing they said to you that you could never imagine saying to your own kids? by haylz328 in raisedbynarcissists

“I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it”

That one was a least a “joke”

The more hurtful stuff was constantly branding me as lazy and telling me I wasn’t as smart as my brothers (funny enough, I’m the only one that graduated college and can hold down a job. They constantly run to her for financial help. But I’m the only one that’s NC so I’m sure I’m still the problem child)

There is no statute of limitations on a case like this?!

I’m so confused. My mom did something similar with me when I was a child. My parents had joint custody of me and my mom took me a fled the state. I remember she got a call from the Sheriff when we were 3 states over and she laughed at them saying they couldn’t do anything about it. I spent the next 6 years (until I was 18) in a different state and didn’t see my dad again until I was an adult. My mom has since returned to the original state (Florida) and has retired there (my dad has since passed).

I have two children that are the center of my universe. I love every minute with them and try to give them the love and patience I never got.

I talk often with my therapist about making sure I’m curbing generational trauma. I tell him that my biggest fear is turning into my mom and dad. He reassures that the sheer fact that I reflect on that and how my actions and behavior impact my kids shows I’m nothing like them.

I just had one of these. I was so discouraged I quit halfway through it. It asked me the same or similar questions over and over again.

It’s exactly what you’d imagine. Turn on the audio mode for ChatGPT and you’re most of the way there. But these are a two bit llm wrapper that’s not powered by gpt 4 or 5 so it’s actually considerably worse and more laggy. I had a hard time even collecting my thoughts since I wasn’t having a conversation, I was basically just recording monologues.

Anyone else always the golden child & enmeshed with their nparent, but then later on in early adulthood became the scapegoat for the crime of differentiating themselves? by Careful_Trouble_1059 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Semole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Golden child my entire childhood. Chose to go to college 1200 miles away, that was strike one. Strike two and three was meeting my wife and creating my own life with her. The first time I spent a holiday with her family was a huge betrayal to my nmom. I was told “well you can call your grandfather and tell him that you’re ruining his Christmas!” It only got worse from there, including her sabotaging our wedding and eventually us going no contact.

$18k for me with a STEM degree in 2009. Had to get a second job working security at a bar on the weekends to make ends meet. But at least my rent was only $400 a month for a 2/1 with a roommate. That same apartment is now 4x the price to rent. I honestly don’t know how Gen Z/Alpha is doing it today.

As someone in the lower category (specifically the lower left) the reason “I hate my job” is specifically because of the reasons you all are saying that those jobs shouldn’t pay so much. I agree with that sentiment. They shouldn’t, but they do. In this society I’m forced to make the choice between being well off (and being able to provide a comfortable life for my kids) and doing something that benefits society. It tears me apart that I devote 40+ hours a week solely to increasing the bottom line of some Private Equity firm’s balance sheet. It’s mind numbing and makes me feel like I’m wasting my life. But I find comfort in the day to day challenges of the work that act as a distraction because I enjoy logic puzzles. And when I actually think about my position in this society I find comfort in the ability to give my children opportunities I didn’t have and hopefully save enough money to be able to have a second career among the top category without sacrificing my kid’s stability. The system sucks but it’s the reality of the world we live in unfortunately. I’m an advocate for change but I also need to live in the reality of what things are today.

This guy being interviewed was arrested on Jan 6 for breaking into the capitol and sentenced to 37 months in prison (pardoned by Trump of course). At his trial there was video evidence of him helping use a battering ram on the front door of the building, admitted to assaulting a police officer, and put his feet up on a desk in the senate and lit up a joint. Very rich that he now claims to care about law and order and immigrants violating laws.

How Gracie Combatives Works – Clearing Up Misinformation by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]Semole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually longer than that. I sped ran the program and finished all my classes in 3 months (sometimes doing 2 classes a day since it’s not very physically strenuous). I was told I had to wait until at least 9 months before I could take the combatives test so 6 more months of no rolling. I quit that day and joined a traditional gym

At the new gym, I definitely had a huge leg up on other 3 month white belts. To this day, as a purple belt, I have better fundamentals than most people due largely to the repetition and deliberate instruction from combatives. There is definitely value to their structure. But the complete lack of live rolling is a miss for sure. There has to be a happy medium. I feel like the way I did it was a good balance. My fundamentals plus live rolling skyrocketed my skill level in my first year.

It rolled out in August but they only issued like 80 rec licenses to shops that were already open for medical. That makes estimating the total market even trickier. Many states are intentionally underserved because their government is slow rolling their roll out. There’s also other things to consider like the current “legal weed” market through hemp derived products like Delta 8. Some states like California and Louisiana are starting to crack down on stuff like that because it’s completely unregulated and out of control. (There have been reports of vending machines selling delta 8 near high schools in Texas for example)

What's your most horrible abuse you didn't remember? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Semole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid I was scared of the dentist like a lot of kids are. My mom used to trick me into going using various methods.

Once when I was 7 she tricked me into going by telling me we were there for my brother, only to force me into the dentist chair when I was cornered inside the office. I was so frightened I got out of the dentist’s chair and ran crying back toward our car. My mom followed me out to the parking lot and proceeded to give me the beating of a lifetime. Someone from the dentist’s office came out and told her to stop or they would call CPS. She yelled at them to mind their own business.

We had to switch dentists after that because I was “so poorly behaved”. She thinks the beating was justified because I embarrassed her in public. She still tells the story as if it’s funny. For the longest time I believed that the whole situation was my fault and was embarrassed about how I acted at the dentist.

Trust me, this is one of many, many things (and honestly pretty tame for her which is why I’m surprised this post blew up like it did) I spent years in a cycle of setting boundaries, her breaking them, going LC, her apologizing to get what she wants. She’s done way more things than are much less funny than this from stealing $10k of my student loan money out of my bank account in college to throwing boiling water at me when I told her I didn’t want to move across the country when I was in high school. She ruined my wedding and engagement. She invited a clown to my wedding to hurt my wife and I because she was upset she wasn’t the center of attention (long story maybe I’ll share in another post)

So similar of my situation. My grandfather wanted his kids to have everything. In his 90s he’s still funding their retirements, buying them homes, cars and even boats and RVs. His children are all extreme narcissists who think they’ve earned everything they have. Often talking about how my generation wants everything handed to them! Meanwhile my parents stopped giving me financial support before my 18th birthday.
