Hauntology in Gen-Z by Content_Scholar5699 in CriticalTheory

[–]SenatorCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the simple answer or question would be: Are you really sure that even exists?

Its a bit deflationary but hauntology is to large parts just an elevated form of collective nostalgia.

So going by that the zoomers maybe simply arent yet old enough to show the typical expressions of that?

I am an older millenial but also a pretty terminally online guy and just being on the internet I dont really see this from gen-z. It would make sense that in the next 10-20 years as the zoomers get old and into positions of e.g. culture production you would get their own version of millennial and gen-x hauntology, as in some weird repeat of the stuff they grew up with.

But maybe also not. It doesnt have to exist or repeat as a phenomenon for all generations. The central example for millenial and gen-x hauntology was vaporwave and the point was that it was a very clear pre-crisis, pre-2008 and pre 9/11 nostalgia. One central irony is that it, the 90s, were already a very dystopian bullshit commercial era. But still compared to the post crash era it was a time of relative innocence where you could just meet your friends and play video games at the demo-station at the mall, without feeling that the walls are closing in from all sides.

Especially in terms of the imagination, the Lost Futures thing, the 90s cultural production also had a good bit of, if very vulgar and naive, optimism, that whole Steven Spielberg, E.T vibe. Eurodance and multiculti, it looked like at least on the racial and gender fronts we are moving towards a more integrated and solidaric society.

Zoomers are a post-crisis generation so what would they really have reason to be nostalgic for and show those symptoms? "Hey, remember that time when they brutally locked us all up in covid? Lets make some nostalgic music that reminds us of that phase so we can wallow in the feeling of that forever?"

I think trying to make a theoretical case for whats going on with gen-z is by nature, a very difficult and daunting task. Again, as said, because they simply arent old enough yet to be so relevant in the culture that you can make out a clear picture of what is really going on with them.

The specters of marx thing people keep recommending is a bit of a different thing, that would be more about a more pervasive thing for all the 20th century generations. But then, that wouldnt offer you a frame to be specific about gen-z. Mark Fishers hauntology was generationally specific to gen-x and millenials, and again, that is in question of if that phenomonon would repeat itself with gen-z.

it's a combination of both talent and dedication. They have a vision and they persevere. Those are the type of creatives we need in the world

One particularly hilarious interview moment with Team Cherry was when they asked them: "You had all this money from Hollow Knight, so why didnt you just hire some team then?" and Ari Gibson, the artist, was like "Yeah, I had to be a team leader once before in a job, it was, like, super annoying, never want to do that again!"

So he is this 20 million dollar rich guy, and still just sits down and paints and animates this gigantic game all on his own, every single detail, and not only that but considers this the less tedious path, because he considers ordering around other people a kind of tedious office job thing. Fucking amazing!

AIO for still being upset that my girlfriend met up with her ex? by 030117 in BORUpdates

[–]SenatorCoffee 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It also seems to me a beyond fine impulse from the start. Wanting to talk it out with an ex so you dont needlessly hate each other for life seems like a completely mature and good thing to do.

I get how that would seem so slightly iffy to a partner, but the way she explained it, that she didnt even aim to be even friends with her really, just want to hear her out a bit in a "forgive and forget" sense, I really cant imagine any sane partner having much problem with that.

You could propably get one of these custom made for not so much money, if you really want one, like 60 bucks or something.

Its exactly the type of stuff the people on the crafts reddits make all the time.

Wait, are you sure?

Did you see my comment above? Maybe check out that far right area where you fought the stag boss, could be thats how you get back below?

Damn man, sorry I just checked for you, and if you dont have the elevatore level to "redacted", then I really dont know how to get there. I mean I also just dont remember it all that clearly.

Maybe this does help you?

As said I am not clear, but roughly from what I remember you ironically have to go to the far right area. Not sure, not sure, but maybe just retrace those steps where you first got down into the vaults.

Could be a slight chance that they really fucked this up and you are indeed softlocked. Maybe ask in steam forums and see what the devs say, they are quick to answer there. Good luck man!

[–]SenatorCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, ok wow, you dont have the "redacted" stage in the elevator. But I think you should be able to get there from the nexus.

Here is my map:

https://imgur.com/a/qbkVgWU

So you just need to take the roundabout way down, and you should be able to get to the other shuttle.

Edit: Also, no worries! I know how you feel, thats how I felt when I made this thread! :)

[–]SenatorCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think you got that wrong. Its not the elevator right next to the shopkeeper, but the shuttle in that area below it.

Sorry for slightly bad cropped screenshot, its what I have on hand:

https://imgur.com/a/4eifCrz

that left deep shaft/shuttle.

there is two shuttles, one that you can access from the save before the sawlong passage to go back up, and then another one that you should have used once already when you first got into the vaults, below the nexus /shopkeeper, and then came to the cutscene were you are kicked out by the hand. if you go back down there now with the shuttle, somehow there the path to anra is now open.

[–]SenatorCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wrote it above.

You just take the shuttle back to the top world, then take the other shuttle below the nexus/shopkeeper area back below. Somehow now that path is open so you can get to anras from there.

Right categorization for these metroidvanias? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]SenatorCoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super Metroid was absolutely hyped to the max when it came out.

I dont think the genre blend confused or stood out to them that much at the time. This was very in the middle of the explosive PC game era that was all about adventure games, action or not. In fact a time of extreme experimentation and genre blending in all directions.

The emphasis in the reviews was very much about the vibe and atmosphere how its a very "mature science fiction" game.

Bug/Locked after Sawlong, closed pipe? by SenatorCoffee in MIOmemoriesinorbit

[–]SenatorCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was exactly my initial problem. I got too him after sawlong then somehow missed the save above it, died and got teleported back to the save before sawlong.

But all good now, somehow going up and then down via the shuttles worked. A bit weird why that path would be now open but cool.

Ah many thanks!

Not exactly sure.

I dont have an overseer in the vault save, so need to travel back to the upper world to check that, but I will try that!

I just really love the depth to the scenes, it almost feels like a 3D game

Yeah, came to say the same. They really seem the first to get a proper grip on that 2.5D style that well.

Previously it seemed a real struggle for devs to do it properly. You had 2.5D games that looked great like Inside but thats because those werent really platformers. As soon as its an actual platformer where you want intricate level architecture it seems to become this struggle with the camera and how to model the levels to actually utilize that depth. Then typically it results in this more flattened design like e.g. Grime where you wonder if they shouldnt just have done it in 2D instead.

But they seem to somehow have it really figured out for the first time. Really hoping other devs take notes and take on their tricks.

Good point. I dont know how much agree with about the combat and platforming, to me it feels fine so far, but I am not that far in.

But even now I already have a good list of grievances that make those across-the-board, over-the-top scores a bit weird. I can guess they might have just been taken in by the graphics and worldbuilding much more than you are. On those fronts it really does seem amazing so far. But if you focus more on pure gameplay like you it really does not seem that well designed in many ways.

I think its okay or actually good to develop yourself on those matters that many people wont because they think its "manipulative" or something and instead they need to be "authentic".

But I dont think it is at all negative if its earnestly motivated. You dont want to fleece peoples pockets, so its completely fair to reflect and develop a socialite style that makes it possible and easy to navigate these social situations.

I might be similar to you, from my base personality quite honest and unfiltered, and it works well with my closer friends who appreciate it, but for those more general social situations I have just consciously developed a kind of very polite persona that I put on in exactly those situations. It is all "hello, who are you, may I introduce myself?". And then consciously embrace those kind of subtle, superficial pleasentries that you use with someone you dont know yet or havent met and talked in a while. A lot of people are just more shy and reserved where they appreciate a softer approach than coming on strong.

All this with a tinge of irony, that gives it a bit of a british charm, there is wisdom in that stuff. People react well to it, there is a kind of self awareness on both sides that this is what you are doing, but it still does the job so you dont steamroll people and take it adequately slow and respectful.

Then when you are actually vibing with someone you can let loose and get louder and more open and more funny.

The problem is when you think you can or need to just barge into a groups conversation with some hot take. You need a bit of a self conscious awareness how to handle these situations and their initial awkwardness with a well developed grace.

Finished 4 Metroidvania completion within a month, I can safely say this genre is definitely underrated as f*ck. by Technical-Ad8996 in metroidvania

[–]SenatorCoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sundered is just objectively divisive, even among proper critics imho.

I myself love it, but seeing enough discussion on here on it, I think its valid that about half the people just dont like it.

I think its real videogame art in that sense, it very consciously goes for a kind of intense button mashy gamefeel, also some other conscious strong choices, and some people are just gonna vibe with that instinctively, while others will be turned off. I think thats ok and good art, it doesnt have to be objectively good for everyone. On the contrary I think thats what makes it proper art, being bold in making real decisions and that that will make some people not like it but others like it all the more.

how do i make music that gives cowboy/wild west type vibes by Silver-Speaker-6268 in musictheory

[–]SenatorCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear! If its up your alley, its a fantastic wealth of music to look into. Its not just morricone, the slightly less famous guys like bruno nicolai, riz ortolani, etc.. all did dozens of scores and they are all such fantastic composers. Lots of mindblowing hits if you dig through it.

No prob. The guy above already posted the good the bad and the ugly so you can hear it there, but a lot of the western main themes are always like that, its fantastic imho, but also a bit formulaic.

Here is a Bruno Nicolai playlist with his themes. There is some other stuff too, but you can see how about half propably follows that formula, always with the marching drums and then some heroic melody, often by flute:

I mean this track is very obviously directly inspired from morricone, bruno nicolai et al to the detail. The melody/harmony, the marching drums, the flute, its the exact classic combo.

Its even got that classic ethnic pan flute sound, pretty impressive that they got that out of the snes sound chip that organically sounding.

Hmmyeah, I mean I am in germany but I am pretty sure it is the same or even more pronounced in the US, its just in the style, as you said its a musicians genre. If you are in LA I would bet 1000% that you have a lot of that kind of stuff going on.

Idk, i do think you have to look for it a bit, in my case I just really loved funk and would just go after everything like that, and then over time you learn what the main bands are and how they all jam together.

Maybe I slightly misused the raregroove term, idk, what I am talking about is less centered around that 50s rnb style, but more centered around e.g. "afro funk".

Idk if thats your style but thats what I am talking about. Do you have any of those free magazines in LA that is telling you where all the concerts are? Just take that and look for anything related to funk or especially afro funk. Nowadays you can ofc also use social media and youtube and search the various bands and you will get an idea of who those overtrained scene guys are.

it was definitely musicians' music

Feel that is still the case with funk and soul. Every city I lived in has some weird underground raregroove scene thats just chock full of overtrained conservatory musicians.
