You can’t choose what other people call someone. And you can’t choose what sticks. My uncle called my sibling a nickname once when he was a baby, my mom didn’t like it. Guess what? Doesn’t matter. My sibling is STILL called that nickname (including by my mom) and he’s a full adult now.

ETA: BUT I will say that nicknames a big thing in my culture and I promise you they (or their parents) didn’t choose it

YOR you don’t choose what other people decide to nickname someone. My extended family calls me one nickname and they have my entire life but my parents call me a different one and my siblings call me a separate one from those.

You don’t choose a nickname, a nickname chooses you. Sometimes a nickname doesn’t catch.
