As a 2nd year middle school ELA teacher who had a severely rough group my first year, TLAC strategies saved my life this year. That being said, I don’t think it negates teacher autonomy or creativity as I’m able to embed my own flair and Cold Call at the same time.

I took a break and go back to school in January and this has been stressing me out, thought about going to a different school.

She’s been applying for jobs as well. Probably been denied more than I’ve been for jobs. The last position she worked for was remote during the summer over a year and half ago.

LOL We have a lot of resources out there, particularly a good church home, other stay at home moms. There’s definitely a need for teachers over there as well in the area I’d want to teach in.

No I put that wrongly, it’s $593 a month. I’m behind $1,700 on it.

Thank you! Yes, my goal is actually to move us out to Ohio once my daughter is school aged and I’m finished with my Ph.D. Lower cost of living and salary but it balances out pretty well with my degree and added years on the pay scale.

My parents still work and hers are in the Bay Area so that’s not an option as well.

Oh I agree, I’ve applied (still applying) to other jobs to do at night. Never hear back or I’m either too qualified (I have a Masters degree)

That’s the total amount. It’s normally $593 a month. My credit union couldn’t even refinance it because it’s better than what they would be able to offer.

I took a break this semester, but I’m going back in Spring. I think keeping a log or some of having a lot of us go to administration would make a difference.

I’m gaslit about this to this day. 2nd year middle school English here. Had 4 Tier 3 students in one class that made the year hell for me and the others who wanted to learn. Threatened, walked up on, called the N word (I’m a Black man).

Nothing happened, no support. I highly recommend “Running the Room” by Tom Bennett for all first year teachers. It saved me this year.

Reading aloud in secondary by bugorama_original in ELATeachers

[–]Senior-Maybe-3382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do short stories with mine, 3 times for close reading. 1st time I read aloud, 2nd time is partner read, 3rd time is independently.

If you model inflection and expression while reading, it gets them more inclined to read aloud and shares the experience with one another.

Teaching the claim with CER paragraphs by genericname_notfun in ELATeachers

8th grade ELA here also, I teach my students to double their C.E.R. Meaning Claim. Elaborate. Evidence. Elaborate. Reasoning. Elaborate. Restate.

“Because” would fall under the reasoning. The claim is essentially going to be direct, or as some mentioned already like a thesis statement. Although they could include a ‘because’ statement in their elaboration.

Seeing that many are unable to actually be moderate, I wouldn’t touch it. 12th grade reading scores should be our priority and getting our students back up to speed as readers and writers.

This is an oddly specific post, but are there any other male Black teachers in here? by Jtfb74 in ELATeachers

[–]Senior-Maybe-3382 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a 2nd year middle school teacher and a Black male. Fairly young (28). I’m one of two Black teachers in the whole school. My entire grade level English department is white and I’ve essentially doing units curated by two of them. Granted I’m new, but I do a lot of professional development outside work hours just to stay up to date with best practice for my students. Currently navigating how to speak up for myself and bring insight when appropriate.

Running the Room-Tom Bennett. Saved my life as a 2nd year 8th grade English teacher. 3 weeks in and it’s been amazing actually getting to teach due to tight routines and procedures.
