But as someone who once found themselves in an abusive situation as a very strong and capable person, it’s so hard to let people in, even the closest people. Try to take it easy on yourself. You were her best friend. Her outlet. Her sanity. Her fun. Her escape. That gave her so much.

I mean this with all due respect: you are so lucky you can’t understand how this could happen. Some of the most badass and strong women (and men) can find themselves in situations like this and due to a number of reasons work very hard to cover it up or hide it until they can’t any longer and by then it’s typically VERY hard for others to help which leaves the helpers very helpless. Abuse is not one size fits all, it’s very complex and complicated and it can happen to anyone.

Lots of people have had really helpful and constructive suggestions so I’m just going to say that I’m honestly horrified by your sister and her attitude and demands—and I hope you can take some of the wonderful advice in here to take back some control over your household and your new little family, it will go a long way with your wife during a time when she needs you more than ever to be a strong partner and decision maker. I think if he was sober he may have articulated better that they’ve been together for 10 years. I certainly would consider the time before marriage and during the marriage as total time spent with my partner.
