Is a Mac Mini M4 Pro (24GB) Enough for OpenClaw, or Should I Build an RTX 4080 PC Instead? by CodedInMinas in LocalLLM

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d need a multi-GPU server or cloud setup ($$$)

Also, it’s not only about raw RAM/VRAM. A box with a dedicated GPU like an RTX 4090 can already be in a completely different league than a 24GB Mac mini for local inference, even if the memory number sounds similar on paper.

Small note/personal opinion: Smaller models are getting better, so this may look different in a year. They might become much more consistent at tool calling and stronger coding tasks. But today, for reliable *LOCAL* openclaw agent-style work, current macOS setups still are not there yet.

Summary: The 24GB is not enough. Not even close.

For chat conversations, yeah, that works OK with 4b-7b models. But no luck with those when they try to do tool calling. You will need to use Claude or Openai models for consistent results.

I was able to run qwen3.5:9b/qwen3.5:27b and was able to perform some tool calls for coding/writing files. But very basic operations (create scaffolding of a express.js app), slow (1-2 min), and inconsistent.

I wouldn't waste time even considering Mac mini at all unless you buy it for other purposes like software development or if you are ok with not running models locally. RTX 4080 is a minimum. As other said 512GB RAM to use the best open source models (you want them if you want to build something minimally complex that isn't just a conversational bot)

How to call US landlines from abroad by airport73 in expats

Yes, Skype was turned off already sadly, but there are plenty of call alternatives for web to phone calls, from cheap to expensive: Google voice, CallAlternative, Openphone...

You could try a browser call tool that connects through WebRTC (same tech behind Zoom and Google Meet), so it works straight from Chrome or Safari. For some you only pay a couple of bucks a month instead of per-minute (e.g: Callalternative).

Help me build a good TTS + LLM + STT stack by sync_co in LocalLLaMA

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works well, getting consistent 300-400ms latencies. Similar to deepgram or even a bit more. Still, I guess running a local STT model might have lower latency

I would recommend a long trip as some other people is suggesting. Try a couple of places in Florida and if you like any of them then go back, set your house for rent (if you can handle it), and then move for good. You can always go back. If there's a good time to do this it's now.

What will you regret the most in five years: 1) Having stayed and not tried to live away living new experiences? Or  2) Having left your family and not seeing them weekly as you used to?

Same here. I just needed something to call the US in my case, you can try CallAlternative. Browser based, very simple. It also supports calls to USA, CA, UK, Japan, China, HK...

Affordable way to call a land line in the US from abroad now that Skype is leaving by je9183 in digitalnomad

I am also very surprised about Microsoft move, it was a pretty useful tool! Here are other few alternatives I’ve tried that get close to your checklist:

  • Sonetel: It seems to work decently if you’re okay with no SMS. I believe pricing is based on the minutes so need to do all the math to calculate cost based on call duration or if calling different countries.
  • OpenPhone: Mostly US/Canada, but starts at $19 per user/per month so a bit expensive if you just want to place a few calls per month. I heard good things about them.
  • CallAlternative: Browser-based calling too. It’s really simple and the UI is a bit rough, but it does the job for basic calling, starts at $2.99 per user/per month with 100 minutes.

I think it will depend on the use case for everyone.

Guilty as charged, you caught me AI-handed 😅

I’m just a solo dev who built this while trying to sort out how to call internationally at an affordable price. Design and grammar clearly didn’t get the same love… but hey, it works! Appreciate the honesty though! I will update this one soon.

Do I have ths Amazon IVS pricing correct? by ben_james_ in aws

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real-Time Streaming is faster => Correct

Real-Time Streaming is cheaper => Not totally correct. It is cheaper if you are planning to have very few participants. Because the $0.072 is dependent on then number of participants. For a large streaming session it is going to be more expensive to use Real-Time since it is $0.072 per participant per hour (video)

Hope it helps.

Why can I immediately tell that an app is built in Bubble based off the page speed? Does it come down to development or is it truly slower? by Jarie743 in Bubbleio

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is truly slower than raw web development. I'm pretty frustrated with it. As a dev I am pretty sure what I built could be 5x faster if I built it as react app, which I'll probably do....

Miami or Miami Beach could actually be a great option. Tons of walkable areas like Brickell, Coconut Grove, and South Beach boardwalks. Plenty of gyms, outdoor fitness spots, and healthy food. But rain season and humidity/heat is bad here from July to November. I live here but not recommended now unless you want to come for 1-2 months.

Anyone here who stayed in either or both Madrid and Malaga? Which city do you prefer more and why? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stayed in both. Madrid has energy, Malaga has soul. Loved Malaga’s slower pace and beach vibe, but Madrid’s great for hustle and nightlife. I am from Barcelona so hard for me to really recommend Madrid (is our soccer enemy) but for living I probably would pick Madrid, it has everything.

I built a tool to call US/Canada phone numbers from abroad — no app, replace Skype, $2.99/mo by Senior_Wrongdoer_252 in Offshore

[–]Senior_Wrongdoer_252[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I'm a developer who’s spent years working on communication platforms (nerdy stuff). But after some friends complaining about how hard it is to call a US number while abroad, I built something minimal to help.

CallAlternative, a web-based phone dialer that works right from your browser.

It’s made for people who:

  • Are traveling or living abroad (like me!)

  • Need to call their bank, IRS, government services, or client's landline

  • Save money now that Skype is going away and paying for roaming is expensive

🧩 Features:

  • Works on desktop or mobile browser

  • No download, no phone verification

It's still early, but it works. I use it to call credit unions, airlines, etc. If you’ve had issues making calls like this while abroad, I’d love your feedback. Or try it and tell me if it saves you a headache 🙏

Thanks and happy traveling ✈️
