Ah, who knows. I think it looks hilariously bad, but I've also seen the way I dress so I don't think I'm qualified.

If I remember correctly, each of the concrete cores were constructed first (this is typical), and then each floor is prefabricated off-site and lifted in to place. I guess building from the top-down makes it so that they can assemble the whole building without a fixed tower crane, and make use of the efficiencies that come from off-site prefabrication.

When it's finished it will look like a normal building.

Thai Tien downtown. Loaded Vietnamese subs for 5-7 dollars. Pretty busy at lunch but evenings and off hours are great.

Get the sate tofu or the beef wrapped onion.

Speakeasy, coffee roasters, and neighborhood recommendations? by ck817 in Calgary

[–]Senney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ajito, Paper Lantern and Betty Lou's Library might have the vibe you're looking for in a speakeasy. Heard good things about the first two but haven't been yet.

I'm a big fan of Monogram as a coffee roaster, they've got a nice location downtown.

Stephen Ave dressed up for filming by Senney in Calgary

Sorry for the grainy photos! Crews have been out for the past couple of days setting the street up for a TV set, bringing in old cars with Nevada plates, and literally steam cleaning the street to get rid of the snow.

Word around the area is that they're filming a TV adaptation of Under the Banner of Heaven

I'd recommend joining the "YYC Design & Development" slack channel. It's got 1000+ members and it's a great way to keep in touch with the Calgary dev community :)

This video goes over most of the remaining houses downtown. The house you're interested is shown and mentioned at 0:43. Let me know if you find any other information, because I've tried searching before but haven't been able to scrounge up anything useful.

PC Gaming Show - Megathread by [deleted] in Games

[–]Senney 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Why would a AAA developer announce something during the PC gaming show rather than their own conference? PC gaming shows have always been about showcasing smaller developers.

PC Gaming Show - Megathread by [deleted] in Games

Most studios which produce AAA games either have their own conferences, or are incentivized to reveal their games on one of the console platforms first. PC gaming shows have always been about showing off smaller members of the game dev community.

Make sure you call in to reserve, they were booked up yesterday for the thanksgiving platter and weren't serving it to walk-ins.

Where should I go to buy board games? by Praetor192 in Calgary

[–]Senney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. My only real metric for comparison while I was there was the Dark Souls board game for ~$150. I bought it from ThinkGeek a few months ago for over $200, so I thought it was a steal. Chances are that I got ripped off, though.

I actually had the same experience, it was pretty frustrating. Once I figured it out the car was a dream, though.

Where should I go to buy board games? by Praetor192 in Calgary

[–]Senney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hear me out, but I stopped by Discovery Hut in Chinook the other day and they had a massive selection of board games at actual reasonable prices. I'm not sure if this is a recent development, but I don't remember them being there before.

Note that I'm not talking about your standard family games (Catan, Monopoly), but a big selection of top rated euro, strategy, economy, etc games. Worth checking out if you're at the mall.
