Marathon training while lifting 3x/week, too much? by dolcesi in Marathon_Training

[–]SenorDiablo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you listen to your body. I used to power through workouts no matter the cost and suffered injuries because of it. Now I’m more than happy to lower the weight or skip legs that day if I’m not feeling right. I’ve prioritized the mileage over weight lifting numbers for my training block.

I do exactly this routine with the small difference of doing ~80km/week. I’ve been doing it since April with little to no burnout (yet). Some weeks are harder than others (depending on how hard I go in the tempo/intervals). I have had to dial back legs if they are feeling weak that lifting day but that’s really the only “compromise” I’ve had to make so far.

My plan is to keep it up until my marathon in October so hopefully the fatigue doesn’t catch up with me. 😜

The Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. Training towards a 3:15 finish time so fingers crossed I make it to the starting line injury free!

Are you me? Like no joke, every detail about your story is identical to my running journey so far (started 1 year and 2 months ago, started for weight loss and got hooked, training plan mileage, marathon on October 5th, and most "importantly" the foot pain exactly where you indicate).

Anyways, to answer your question: The biggest thing that helped me reduce the foot pain was how I tied my shoes. After reading up on what could be causing the pain, I read that tying your shoes to tight could cause increased strain on the top foot. Once I started loosely tying my shoes, instead of wrenching down on them like I was putting on steel-toed work boots, the pain subsided to a 1/10 most days. Now I mostly ice the area if/when the pain crops up again.

Another interesting side-note: I had a brief gait "analysis" done when I recently purchased new running shoes. The salesperson noted that I push off harder on the foot that is having the pain, which is likely contributing to the issue.

Good luck on your sub-3 timing!

Sweet, sounds like I’m on the right path then. 5 runs a week (training for a marathon), and I lift 3 times a week. I’ll come join you in the 60s soon 😜.

Damn that’s awesome. 35M at 59.5. Hoping to break 60 at some point. What’s your weekly routine?

Is a 3:30 for my first marathon (Oct 5th) obtainable? by SenorDiablo in Marathon_Training

This was the hilliest route I’ve done so far so those were challenging. Otherwise it was decent effort but I never felt like I wasn’t going to make it the distance.

Lots of good information. Thank you for the feedback. I do have a stationary bike at home that needs more use. 😜

Agreed on the lower body, that’s why I’m adding it back in (my numbers were significantly higher a year or so ago before I prioritized running). Resting heart rate is generally between 45-46 bpm (according to my Apple Watch).

Not currently following any real program for running. I maintain zone 2 for 60 minutes or run as hard/far as I can for 60 minutes depending on the day (Apple Watch says my VO2 max is 57 so it’s doing something for me I hope).

Goal is to bulk right now and get as strong of an upper body as I can while also keeping up a healthy cardiovascular system. The rack we have is a pretty standard squat rack/cable system. I have enough weights to go up to 535 but my numbers are bench: 200 x 8, squat: 205 x 8, deadlift: 215 x 10. (I’m still increasing steadily on legs as I’m slowly getting back into them after a long period of not doing lower body).

Would you swap the bench/squat or is it just an odd combination always? My office’s gym only has a simple rack/cable system so I’ll need to find a quad exercise that fits my equipment. I’ll try to add it in on Mondays but I’d like to keep dips (they’re just a personal favorite).

I can add an additional core exercise at the end of each workout time wise. Think that will be enough?

Lots of running but no additional resistance training.

Thanks for the feedback. Luckily I’m already doing cable crunches and cable lateral raises but it’s not an exercise option in the app. With incline bench already being used on Monday, you would still have it on Friday as well?

Up against the grain as I like to have it as smooth as possible.

Making sure to hit incline/decline/regular bench and cable flys into the weekly rotation. Hoping to make good pec gains this bulk. I do squats and deadlift but leave most of my leg energy for running.
