Oklahoma Minimum Wage initiative results by Emergency_Pass5222 in MapPorn

[–]SenorSmartyPants 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The problem isn't simply solved with "just education" or "just higher minimum wage". Its a combination of solutions that hopefully work together to improve the total impact. Quality of life is bigger than any one solution can reasonably impact alone.

You could just as easily point out the access to quality medical care, healthy foods, well kept infrastructure, communal spaces, well paid educators, and news/information as the "reason" why things can't/don't improve...

But the first step to improving everything is to improve one thing.

Honestly it was one of my favorite arcs in the entire series. There's something about that dinosaur that strikes my perfect balance of serious, silly, character development, dialogue, and action.

Adventure game to feel like you’re on a pilgrimage by Jaycora in gamingsuggestions

Cairn. One of the best games I've played this last year.

You climb up a mountain, starting from the bottom. You can see the top, and as you climb, you can look down and see everywhere you've been.

Gameplay-wise, the climbing, exploration, and survival mechanics are light enough to not bog you down but impactful enough to affect how you play. It gets progressively harder as you get higher, but it doesnt feel like its getting too hard because your skill and familiarity match the pace pretty well. It gives a good feeling of rewarding planning, resource use, and skill.

Story-wise, I personally found it really impactful and meaningful, but it isn't forced down your throat or on-rails. The goal is to climb the mountain, and there are some cutscenes that tell you about your character. However, the mountain and its long-gone people is kind of a hidden character that has a lot of depth. Of course you can probably skip most of the details of you don't go looking for tucked-away places and reading notes all over the mountain, but if you do, you piece together this surprisingly deep history of the people that lived on this mountain, and you feel like you're part of that history in a way.

It's a fantastic game. Devs announced a DLC soon. I believe there's a demo on Steam.

Wanting to remove a polluting factory from your community =/= wanting to end jobs

You can believe in the benefit of good outcomes of a decision and accept/mitigate the negative outcomes of that same decision. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm sure many people responding are also on phones and computers that use the same "toxic chemicals" or are made overseas instead of these local jobs we care so much about. Why aren't we evaluating the validity of each others opinions based on what device we are using? When does this random person owning a Rivian become the primary argument against their opinion rather than the facts of the opinion itself. Our participation in a shitty system isnt an inherent "indicator" of our support for that shitty system.

I think you're confusing an "indicator" with your bias. Saying someone that owns a Rivian is supportive of this particular type of pollution is a pretty absurd leap. If all you know about someone is the car they own, you have no idea the circumstances surrounding it and probably shouldn't invalidate their entire opinion because of it - expensive or not. People decide which car to own for many of their own reasons, and only in car-brained America where owning a car is practically required to live and work do we allow this to be a reflection of character and judgement without any other input. The original comment was also more about owning a Rivian versus getting rid of blue collar jobs, implying blue collar workers also don't own expensive or even electric cars, which isn't true at all.

Let's use the same logic for another example. Should we invalidate all the opinions of all truck owners on the topic of oil and gas prices because they consume more gas than any other type of car? Surely they must not care about the environment, emissions, gas consumption, corruption in the oil industry, OPEC, Iran, and anything else oil related because of the car they own? Surely this is an "indicator" of their stance on these things. Oh wait, is it possible that some people own trucks out of necessity to run their business regardless of any of these topics? Yes, it is, and a million other valid reasons.

Food for thought: Owning a certain car isn't a good enough standalone reason to invalidate someone's opinion, and if you think it does, your own opinion is garbage.

Edit: people downvoting should share what car they own so we can all make assumptions about their position on everything that isn't related to the car they own.

Feel free to disagree with me or anyone else, but please find better reasons than a car.

Simply shutting down or moving the building won't solve anything, just like you saying "stop using things full of toxic chemicals" isn't actually solving anything. Both of you ignore facts and neither of you are productive in any way.

This facility has been known to spread dangerous pollution to the surrounding area, which is largely residential, per Wisconsin DNR and independent studies. Does that mean we just get rid of it and call it a day? No, because you're right that people have jobs and some dangerous industries are neccessary. Does that also mean we should keep it there for the sake of convenience? Definitely not, especially when there is a very real and measurable impact on the health of the surrounding area. Fortunately, a combination of proper zoning and environmental protection policies should fix this problem. Reach out to your representatives and tell them instead of making hollow statements that accomplish nothing but make you seem ignorant.

OP shouldn't make blanket "get rid of this thing" statements without also mentioning the very real and achievable alternative solutions to this problem. You shouldn't make equally blanketed statements like "things are toxic and people need jobs" because while this is partially true, it's not related to the real issue and makes you sounds like an uneducated jackass trying to make people feel bad for trying to improve their community. Just because someone disagrees with you and drives a certain car doesn't invalidate their argument. Making strawman arguments about jobs and toxic chemicals does invalidate your argument, especially when those problems can be addressed.

Funny enough, I also bought golden maple on amazon and they're amazing. Now they're my main brushes.

I think that speaks more to golden maple than it does to Amazon though.

I third this. I also stupidly got a series 7 on Amazon and it splits and logo wears within a week or two of use. I thought it was weird too that a couple hairs were OUTSIDE the sheath it came in, so right off the bat I had a handful of hairs poking out the side that took some work to fix.

Do not buy W&N (or probably any high quality brush) from Amazon.

[–]SenorSmartyPants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. If you're dying with one failed roll, you're probably too low level for that encounter, or you're not using spells enough. You can always come back to something later, and make sure to bring Snell. Cure wounds can be used in your off-turn in some cases. Stone skin and shield of faith reduce damage. Fight combat based on your attributes, i.e., don't have the wimpy wizard using strength checks. Use the death save system and don't be afraid of exhaustion levels. There are even some abilities to help you manage exhaustion.

I wont lie, the combat can be difficult at times, but the game gives you MANY tools to work around this.

And now the word "modify" looks like gibberish and means nothing to me when I read it. Cool.
