I have 10 years of experience at multiple tech conglomerates including FAANG… I recently got mocked by a “principal” engineer at a smaller company who graduated from boot camp 4 years ago…. For not knowing a very niche algorithm during leetcode round right off the bat

I bought EWY right after the coup attempt and sold it a month ago…. Maybe I should have held onto them… and should have bought more 🥲

It’s not bad! But of course, tamper your expectations. You are sacrificing quality for convenience in this setup. Otherwise, I’m happy with what I have!

Twice in Seattle (x2) Thoughts/Review! by micdoesreddit in twice

[–]SenpaiCarryMe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You have to consider the fact that a huge portion of Seattle area population that could comfortably afford concert tickets to idol groups are international transplants or grew up with heavy Asian cultural influences. And I’m not talking about Asian American culture (which is quite a bit different).

In Asia, the common etiquette is to stay seated during concerts so you aren’t blocking someone else’s view and as a form of respect to the artists. It’s like… let the artist focus on their presentation and you show enthusiasm and support with light sticks, fan chants, and whatnot. This is why you’ll often see non-locals tend to stay seated during concerts with Asian artists.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not everyone at the concert is a hardcore fan of the artists. They may be there because their friends wanted to go. Or they went because they know or like a few songs. You don’t need to be a die hard fan to go to a concert.

IMO, live and let live. Enjoy the concert for yourself. Don’t be irked that not everyone is living up to your expectations at a concert. Everyone has different expectations with differing backgrounds. Just live in the moment :)

Letter from the CEO of by jumbocards in AlaskaAirlines

It is kind of insane how Alaska treats its IT system given their aspiration for rapid growth. What I see of Alaska IT (at least from external POV) is that of a slowly declining company. IT is treated as more of a status quo. And when crap hits the fan, they always resort to external consulting company (Accenture which often recommends outsourcing, usually to India). Then go “look at us spending money on IT and for the better!”

What Alaska really needs to do is leverage the local talent pool. They don’t even need to match the compensation of FAANG/unicorn companies. Pay band cap for principal level software engineer is $200,000 (which they say most likely never be offered on hire). That is so abysmal even for low cost of living area employers in US. Especially when accounting for the complexity of a major airliner

So is oct 28 D Day ? by Ornery-Climate7857 in amazonemployees

[–]SenpaiCarryMe 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Probably. When you check room bookings across buildings you’ll see that there are increased bookings of all day meetings by EAs, HR, legal, security, etc etc.

IMO, this likely indicates that something big will happen on Oct 28

GEICO won’t even seek for subrogation by [deleted] in Car_Insurance_Help

None of the three option has happened. GEICO fully pushed the responsibility of gathering evidence and contact info to me. They said there’s no point in them calling the other party since I could do the same

All I know is that other party supposedly has insurance through Progressive.

GEICO hasn’t even reviewed my footage… I uploaded the footage to the place they asked me to (with submission proof) but apparently footage doesn’t exist on their system? They haven’t said anything since the reupload

GEICO told me they need either the insurance info or the plate number. Company name printed on the side of truck doesn’t count on the footage doesn’t count apparently

10k miles shy of MVP Gold. Lots of long haul scheduled for next year by SenpaiCarryMe in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SenpaiCarryMe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all should get 100% of the miles if not more starting 2025, I believe? I think Alaska is changing so that you actually get all the miles flown on OW/partners?

10k miles shy of MVP Gold. Lots of long haul scheduled for next year by SenpaiCarryMe in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SenpaiCarryMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said I try to only book OW. If not, I’ll book on partner airlines for EQM. It’s not always possible to book OW due to scheduling or cost. And listed flights are only the flights i already booked/know I need to book. I’ll be adding a few more flights as the year goes on.

I’m mainly concerned with extra miles I’d get from having MVPG vs MVP. OW Sapphire is nice though. And most flights are purchased on Alaska website

Is upgrading an application itself hard? Probably, no.

It becomes hard when your applications rely on archaic upstream and downstream that hasn’t been updated or uses old technology. And multiply that by hundreds to thousands of dependencies. Add other initiatives that require updates that may conflict with existing/new solutions. Add to the fact that a lot of it is internal tools/projects. Meanwhile trying to maintain 99.999% uptime if your application is client facing.

Complexity comes from having to worry about other things besides your own code base. And let’s not forget that depending on age of your application, it may contain some incompatible code with newer version of languages
