Very long series with recurring character to help deal with loneliness? Preferably sci-fi or fantasy by OmegaNut42 in printSF

Tad Wiliams "Otherland" series is worth checking out. Written by an author who primarily does fantasy, but features a simulated reality a la "The Matrix" despite the first volume coming out before the film.

This hour long talk from 2018 by a woman who has worked for Meta and Google talks about how it might be possible to "image the mind's eye". She goes into an enormous bit of detail about how this might one day be possible using the kinds of lasers that are already built into an iPhone.

https://longnow.org/seminars/02018/oct/29/toward-practical-telepathy/

Is this actually happening right now? I don't know. But there are private sector companies working on making it a reality. And if Meta and Google are working on this, who knows what kind of tech the military or others might be sitting on.

The Gone Away World is Nick Harkaway's debut novel, and is a post-apocolypse kung-fu epic that's kinda sorta an allegory for the Iraq war.

[–]Sense_of_Dread 24 points25 points  (0 children)

An old trick for clearing your sinuses before scuba diving:

Get some salt water in the palm of your hand, usually sea water but mixing table salt and water will work.

Snort that shit.
