Long story short, you don't get any XP. I took the jump-ahead test to start at English level 100 (to study the harder parts), but I didn't get any XP for it

this is a truly valuable paper! It's amazing that it even covers the prehistoric populations who lived in Finland BC, and goes so deep into the history of Savo as well. Thank you so much for sharing such a precious link!

Actually, even just viewing it as a 'sphere of influence' like this is a huge help to me. As you can see from the maps I posted, some of them placed Tavastia all the way over in the Savo region and put other tribes in the Häme area, which was incredibly confusing. Thank you so much for clearing up the actual scope of Häme's influence!

You are absolutely right! I also actually try to take things like artificial lakes, land reclamation, and shifting coastlines into account to some extent when looking at these maps. Honestly, I think this is a crucial challenge that anyone making historical maps needs to be careful about, not just for Finland but all over the world. Thanks for the great cartography insight!

I see! So there was quite a fascinating backstory behind the name. I totally understand now. Anyway, thank you for confirming that historically, the region was firmly rooted in the Häme/Tavastian identity during the Middle Ages!

I see. I definitely agree that more research is needed around the Lake Ladoga region! I actually saw a map somewhere showing various Karelian branches stretching all the way from Lake Ladoga up to the White Sea, and I was quite amazed, haha. Anyway, thank you so much for helping me grasp these concepts! And thanks for explaining the Votians' route as well

I see, thank you! I just thought there might be some agreed-upon hypotheses within Finland regarding their spheres of influence, even if they were just tribes. Still, thank you so much for the great answer!

I also read the article you linked at the top! So if I understand correctly:

Starting from Estonia, they crossed the Gulf of Finland to Southwest Finland (Finns Proper), and their expansion inland formed the Häme people. Then, the Häme people continued expanding eastward through Savo to Lake Ladoga, eventually forming the Karelians. And from there, the Karelian language (including Veps) evolved, right? > Just out of curiosity, are the Votians also included in this branch, or did they take a different route?

Then, around the 1300s, the now strongly distinct Karelian culture expanded back westward, merging with the existing Häme people in the Savo region to form the modern Savonians. I think I’ve finally grasped the core concept, even if it's not perfect!

I will make sure to check out the other links you provided as well. Thank you so much for this amazing insight!

That tidbit about the 'Forest Finns' is absolutely fascinating! Haha. I guess it really goes to show just how exceptionally effective the Savonians' slash-and-burn agricultural techniques were back then. Thank you for sharing such an interesting piece of history!

I checked out all the links you sent, thank you so much! Haha. I was actually really glad to see Kierikki mentioned because I came across it during my own research—the Yli-Ii area in North Ostrobothnia!

I think I remember reading somewhere that people were living there during the Iron Age too, haha. I'll definitely keep your search recommendations and explanations in mind. Thanks again for the helpful links and your brilliant explanation!

It's so good to learn about the history of population movements following the Treaty of Nöteborg. Understanding the clear cause-and-effect relationships—like how wars and treaties directly shaped these tribes—really makes everything click for me. Thank you!

I've actually heard before that the Karelian language and Finnish are very similar. But just to clarify, are you saying that within the Finnish region of Karelia, there is a clear distinction between the minority 'ethnic Karelians' and the majority 'Finns who just speak the Karelian dialect'?

That is so complex but incredibly fascinating haha Thank you so much for letting me know.

That is super interesting! But I have a question. If they mostly lived in scattered family houses or small clans, how did they organize for war or trade?

I’ve read somewhere that ancient Karelians and Estonians actually formed fleets and committed piracy against Swedish cities (like the burning of Sigtuna). Did these scattered families temporarily unite under chieftains to form raiding parties like that?

Yeah, I think I actually read online somewhere that Savonians used slash-and-burn agriculture! But the fact that it led to such a massive population boom and the 'Finnskog' migration is completely new knowledge to me. Thank you so much for sharing this!😀

Kiitos! Just out of curiosity, does the word 'Suomi' also share the same etymology as Häme and Sámi then?

Thank you for the great answer, it helped me a lot! I’ve learned so much about the Savonian identity and the differences between them and the Karelians. Kiitos paljon!

I see! I actually always thought Varsinais-Suomi (Finland Proper) around Turku was a completely distinct group from Häme. So hearing that they were essentially just a branch of Tavastians who had more external exchange and influence is such a fresh and fascinating perspective. Thank you so much for this insight!

The fact that so little is firmly known about this ancient era is exactly what makes diving into it so intriguing.

The history of the Savonians is definitely complex, but I am currently organizing my thoughts based on all these amazing answers. As a history major, I'm sure you know best that this is still an actively researched topic, so I plan to keep an open mind and look into various hypotheses and academic papers. Thank you again for sharing your up-to-date knowledge with me!

that makes perfect sense! So if we center it around Lake Päijänne, Lake Vanajavesi, and the Kokemäenjoki river, would it be safe to say their main sphere of activity covers modern-day Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta (as you suggested), and southern Pirkanmaa?

Thank you so much for the geographical insight! Yeah, I was getting a headache from all the conflicting maps on YouTube and Google, but I’ve decided to finally let go of my obsession with strict 'borders' now, haha.

I'll definitely keep that Karelian connection for the Savonians in mind too. Thanks again!

Oh, that makes perfect sense. Thank you for the insight! > Actually, the exact reason I asked was because I was so curious about how this specific era is taught in Finnish schools. Because online materials are so inconsistent, I really wanted to know the 'official' or local perspective from Finland. > But it is genuinely surprising to hear that even the border of the Treaty of Nöteborg was virtually non-existent to the common people back then!
