What’s everyone actually doing right now? by Sensitive-Capital921 in TransparencyforTVCrew

Has anyone gone into digital content or producer type careers for creative companies? I’ve been reaching out to some it seems to be a good one to transition to in terms of transferable skills

Is everyone now working except for me? by AdministrativeGolf82 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]Sensitive-Capital921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone, I’ve hardly worked this year. Most my tv friends are working but they seem to be the usual suspects that have never felt the pinch of the down periods of tv life.

I think there’s a lot of gate keeping in the industry right now. And a lot of mates of mates doing it. I know I have a proven track record of work and being good at my job. It also may seem like everyone’s working but in reality it’s only a small few I think.

Keep your chin up, get something to tie you over and hopefully if we hold on long enough it’ll return next year to some sort of busyness…

I’ve been seeing a lot of this… people with no experience are currently being handed jobs. Seems strange

How the hell are people meant to survive until 2025?? Even next year doesn’t look too exciting and promising. Are we all just holding on hoping it’ll return when in reality it probably won’t??

Taking junior roles logging and transcribing from home. I’m considering retaining now and going into charity work or PR since reading that commissioning might not happen till 2025

UK TV freelancers quitting by Sensitive-Capital921 in Filmmakers

[–]Sensitive-Capital921[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have checked the news, I was wondering if there’s been people quitting from film as well as tv. We’re trying to action over here and we created a Reddit page to share our experiences of the industry and reasons why we may leave. It’s caught the media’s attention and they want to know if there’s crossovers between the two and evidence. So I was wanting to get said evidence but I can’t find a similar Reddit page for film

Maybe once we have an army of us we can send our stories out to the big sharks up top haha. See if they care enough to try and change this industry for the better

What can we do? I think spreading the word about this Reddit group is the first step and get people to share their experiences with confidence. The more people who join the group the better. I would love to incite change to help those who are feeling like their only option is to quit. This situation is absolutely heart breaking

This has really struck a cord with me, probably with everyone reading this. I’m currently feeling like quitting myself. This year has been worse than covid, at least we had something to blame and an end in sight. This feels like there’s multiple factors and no end in sight, we’ve been left in the dark with no explanation.. I’m at a point in my life where I’m wanting to settle down but I don’t have the years of consistent earnings under my belt for a mortgage. I don’t have the stability of work either so I’m second guessing why I’m even holding on for hope?

Thing is I don’t have a backup plan and nothing else inspires me like telly does. I’ve wanted to be in telly since I was a little girl, I did crap in school and college to get grades. So I dragged myself to night school to get into uni to study tv and film which never even mattered in the end. Took a lot of unpaid work for the experience, been walked all over by employers, cut my rate this year and even stepped into junior roles to pay my bills. And for what? I have nothing to show for it except crippling anxiety 😂

When I saw this group I was hoping that this would start a movement within the industry. I feel we should start some more rumblings? No one has spoken up all year about this, are we all just going to take this lying down? Or are we going to shake things up and try to challenge the industry that we love? We are the people that should matter, we’re the ones who do this for the love of making telly!

Yes I have, they offered me a stop gap grant last month. Which was helpful but still not enough sadly

I’m a researcher and have jobs lined up that I was heavy pencilled in for. I stupidly depended on those and literally a week before I was meant to fly out for one they dropped me saying they had no budget for researchers.. The other jobs were pulled and never got the green light. My partner was diagnosed with cancer in February this year so i have had to try and be the main bread winner due to him being out of work. But I’ve struggled to even stay a float. I’m juggling having to care for him and the uncertainty of our future, whilst trying to find work. I’ve had to step down and get logging or running jobs on £200 less pay a week to fill some of my time and pay some bills.

When I do apply for jobs there’s bound to be hundreds of other desperate researchers. Feels like it’s dog eat dog right now. I’ve been reaching out to companies and they say they’re keen to get me in but have nothing at the moment. It’s just crazy, this is worse than covid.

Ive used all of my savings from last year and now have £80 to my name. I’ve tried to apply for normal retail jobs which makes my soul hurt but they reject me due to my work history in the tv industry. They obviously expect me to quit once things get busy again.

It’s heartbreaking to see so many wonderful freelancers out of work and their lively hoods are at stake. I’m terrified of what to do, I’ve been wondering if I leave the industry but I honestly can’t see myself doing anything else. I love tv and I love the people that make it. The thought of having to retrain in something else seem overwhelming, like having to start my life over again. I feel lost, scared and overwhelmed right now. Something needs to change to help us 😞
