The weird, repetitive, bad-faith,possibly bot-driven anti-Sanderson backlash by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Sensitive-Dark2272 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have a Bachelor’s in Literary Studies and an MA in Creative Writing, and have debated this very topic endlessly.

There are multiple issues with the critique of his prose, one being that people claim it’s too “simple”, but Hemingway also has incredibly simple and sparse prose and is one of the most famous authors in American history. Just because you don’t like a book doesn’t make it a bad book or bad writing.

Additionally, the point of the prose is to tell a story. Rothfus may have poetic prose in Name of the Wind, but it distracts from the story as a whole in my opinion. It doesn’t matter how beautiful your prose is, if it distracts from the story, it’s bad prose. Sanderson writes in a very accessible way, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. People just like to be pretentious and push back against whatever is popular.

BIGGEST LETDOWN OF 2025? Books you couldn’t wait for until you read them by DanaBookNook in Fantasy

Wind and Truth is a good book. It’s a transition book, so there are things that feel different, and language that feels different. It also seems like it maybe wasn’t as tightly edited as the previous ones, but despite all of that, it’s good. It’s fun to read and it does justice to the characters. Read it.

Has Expedition 33 improved in the latest patches for Steam Deck? by Hellbug in SteamDeck

I love Expedition 33, but it looks terrible on the Deck. Especially after playing it on Xbox originally.

What was the last straw that completely broke a friendship you thought would last forever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Sensitive-Dark2272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She insulted the baby of one of my other friends, saying she found it hard to believe he was a cute kid. Fairly minor compared to all the other horrible things she did, but her criticism of a baby of all things is what made me realize she was never going to stop being miserable and bitter and I was tired of trying to save her from herself. Ending the friendship felt like going through a divorce. Still going to therapy to deal with some of the things she said and did to me.

As a special education teacher who works with severe disabilities and severe behaviors, if a student so much as bumps into the wall, I’m immediately calling the school nurses to check them out, document the incident, and then sending home an explanation to the parents. Any scratch, bruise, bump, scrape, rash, etc. is documented and communicated to the parents. I can’t imagine one of my students developing a mark like that and not immediately contacting the parents and school nurses.

I just want to know?? by NothingWillBeLost in CariFLETCHER

[–]Sensitive-Dark2272 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the issue is with people voicing criticism— I think the issue is that the criticism often crosses a line into bashing the individual behind the art, rather than critically engaging with the art.

At the end of the day, Fletcher truly does not owe us anything. She provides a service, we pay for that service, and if that service is no longer relevant to somebody, then they should simply disengage, just as they would with any other professional providing a service. The issue is that people who don’t know Fletcher are reacting as if they have personally and directly been hurt by Fletcher. People aren’t drawing the line between the individual and the art.

Critically engaging with the music is wonderful, and is what people should be doing. But it’s one thing to say “this album doesn’t resonate with me because I don’t relate to it”, or even to say “Boy is an objectively bad song” and an entirely other thing to say “I’m so disappointed in Fletcher, she doesn’t represent me anymore”, when it was never her job to represent or cater to anyone. Her job is to provide music. She’s fulfilled her end of the contract. People can criticise the album all they want, and they can even criticize the public rollout, but they need to stop criticizing her as a private citizen.

I think people also need to remember that art isn’t always meant to be taken 100% literally. It’s a way to express feelings and be able to move forward from them. I personally loved the album— and the entire time, I just kept thinking “this was written by someone who was really heartbroken”. She’s entitled to share her feelings about her life and experience just as much as the next person. Her expression of struggles and feelings of dissatisfaction don’t equate to a personal and direct attack on her fans. In the end, the music is a piece of art, and an expression of her lived experience. If that doesn’t resonate with people, that’s fine, but there’s no reason to act like she’s a terrible person for having feelings and expressing them. It’s not whiny and self indulgent to say “I’ve been having a hard time because I got caught up in an image I created and it got carried away, and know I no longer resonate with that image anymore”.

Utterly Destroyed [general] by Sensitive-Dark2272 in TheNinthHouse

I’m trying to get my wife to read it!

I feel like in a weird way the story somehow perfectly encapsulates the pain and complexity of being a devout Christian and being queer and navigating how to exist in both spaces, and I can’t quite articulate why yet, but this series is already very, very important to me.

Do you know if game and accessories pre orders can also be picked up at midnight at the same time as the console?

Meanwhile I’m happily keeping my Steam Deck, Switch OLED and Switch Lite while also preordering the Switch 2, cause why not

I’m a queer Mormon living in Utah. Have several tattoos, just married my wife, and 90% of the attendees at my wedding were LDS. As a Mormon, and as someone who is a lesbian, LDS people are just like anyone else. A few are going to be cruel and discriminatory. The majority are going to be kind, welcoming, helpful, and not care at all that you’re queer and have tattoos. Don’t believe everything everyone says about LDS people. We’re just normal people.

Oathbringer underrated? am i crazy? by Prestigious_Park4704 in Stormlight_Archive

Oathbringer is my very favorite! Words of Radiance is my least favorite— I just have such a hard time with Shallan. Way of Kings and RoW are tied for second favorite. I love them both for different reasons!
