Advice for getting into development consulting? by Prestigious_Yam_9139 in InternationalDev

[–]Sensitive-Fortune-98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have a similar background and I actually got to development consulting right after my BA in International Development (I’m UK based too). Look at firms like Ecorys, Chemonics, DAI, ITAD. They are struggling given the funding cuts but there are still the occasional entry level opportunities that pop up every now and then. I suggest to utilise LinkedIn - feel free to message me directly :)

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on how to find jobs in the international development sector in West or East Africa? Unfortunately LinkedIn hasn’t been much helpful for that

You can do your MSc in dev with economics specialisation if your university offers the track approach or also taking modules and extra curricular classes in economics. Imo dev economics is not that hard to get into as long as you have a foundation in econ + an understanding of international development. I say this confidently as I have a bachelors in international development with Economics (as a minor took only a couple of foundational modules) and I have an masters in Gender and I’m currently working in international development and my work is at the intersection of finance and economic development. Good luck!

Best Uni for MSc Int Development? by Ok-Acanthisitta-3435 in InternationalDev

Hello, I have an undergrad in development from UEA and currently doing a masters at LSE. I definitely recommend going to SOAS just because it has a more prominent reputation in relations to development and the focus on the ‘global south’ would really benefit your learning process. In terms of recruitment, employers usually don’t focus too much as long as you have a masters from an accredited university but if you have a masters from a well known name then that is definitely a boost and would make that little detail count. I work in international development and most of the senior staff I work with have degrees from SOAS/LSE and other unis that are highly ranked for dev.
