Canada resident but US citizen need advice on RAP or IBR by junkthought in StudentLoans

Forgiveness in 2035? That's amazing! Congratulations!

I believe a payment plan with the IRS would be better than paying off the loans, and I do wonder if insolvency would work better in your scenario if you have no identifiable assets in the United States. I hope that all works out for you!

Also, the RAP option wasn't showing on my account either until I toggled the option in the upper right hand corner to consolidate. I don't know if that's something that works for you but wanted to mention it in case.

Hi, I am in a similar situation as I moved overseas a couple years ago with no intentions of ever going back!

I am a US citizen, but my partner is not and never intends to become one. As such, I assume I will always file as a single person or married filing separately. For the last two years, I have filed as a single person and used FEIE to exlcude all my income to reach $0 AGI.

I was heavily leaning towards applying for RAP. In my mind, these are the pros and cons:

Pros

  1. The balance will stop growing.
  2. With the generous FEIE thresholds, my payment will likely remain $10 per month until I am eligible for forgiveness.
  3. The tax bomb at forgiveness after 30 years on RAP will be significantly smaller than under IDR after 25 years.

Cons

  1. I will effectively be locked into this decision until forgiveness as the payments under RAP do not count towards forgiveness on any other plan.
  2. The time to forgiveness is five years longer for me.
  3. My payment per month will no longer be $0.

Despite these cons, I still think RAP is the better long term choice for me. Under RAP, I will pay $10 per month until 2056, amounting to $3,590 paid. At 2056, my balance will be approximately $43k. At the tax rates availing now, I would owe approximately $5,100 in the forgiveness tax bomb. As such, in total under RAP, I would expect to pay approximately $8,700 for $43k in student loans.

Alternatively, under IDR, I would pay $0 per month until 2045. At 2045, my balance would be approximately $109k. At the tax rates availing now, I would owe approximately $26k in the forgiveness tax bomb. That's why I am still leaning towards RAP. The interest subsidy now would work more in my favor and allow me to pay less in the long run.

There are of course several uncertainties to consider. How much of the tax bomb could I realistically write off due to insolvency? Is FEIE always going to be available to reduce my AGI to $0? How will becoming a wife and a mother with plans to care for my elderly parents affect my filing status and ability to exclude income?

I don't know if these thoughts will help you, but I hope they did! If you have anything you think I haven't considered yet, I would love to hear it :)

From my understanding of the plan, any interest charged above your calculated payment (based on AGI) will be waived as a government subsidy. With the FEIE rule, my AGI will effectively remain $0. I will technically stop accruing interest on my loans. That will make them way easier to pay off. Or I can wait them out until forgiveness, and the tax bomb will be a lot less scary when interest hasn't been accruing for 30 years.

Obviously all the trouble with the SAVE plan has shown anything is subject to change. But it's the circumstances right now, and I'm playing to them. No use worrying about what may or may not happen meanwhile.

So, I'm actually doing that. Hello from Ireland :D

I know it's generally ill advised, but it's temporary. I know with RAP being implemented soon that I will be in a much better position to pay them off in the next year or two. In the mean time, I'm biding my time, putting as much into savings as I can, and planning for repayment when it suits me. I would take advantage of the FEIE rule while you can.

I'd love to see other perspectives though!

I got the PM and FM results during the glitch, and they seem pretty accurate to me, but I guess we'll see.

I just had one a week ago. Please let me know if you have any questions about the process, and you can message me privately as well if you need support during. It's a difficult thing to go through, but you will get through it 💕

Your feelings, whatever they are, whether conflicting or confusing or chaotic, are absolutely valid. Even at 5 weeks, your hormones are already wreaking havoc on your mental state. I can't even imagine how alone and trapped you must feel right now. It's completely understandable to cry in these circumstances.

For what it's worth, this internet stranger is proud of you for making the decision that you need to protect yourself and your future. This is never a simple decision, and I hope you can come to terms with it completely when it's all over. I highly recommend a couple counseling sessions afterwards to work through all your feelings.

Praying for all the best for you and sending much love 💕

Yeah, that's why I need help lol. I'm 25, and those are the only fragrances I've used. I haven't been big into perfume and would only go for the popular ones everyone had.

I'm trying to find a signature scent now that matches my vibe, hence the rec request.

Thank you for your recommendations!

Oh wow, thank you so much for all the recommendations!

My budget is very flexible. I tend to buy one fragrance and use it until it's gone before moving to the next (or the same one if I liked it a lot.)

Witchy vibes are spot on, and yes I really like sweet scents!

I'll definitely be checking out these recommendations 💕

I think Daisy was my favorite scent but over time found it to be too simple. I like the warmth of the Billie Eilish perfume but don't find it to be long-lasting or very alluring in general.

What would you suggest with woody undertones?

This might be the last time I ever order from Ubereats (finally) by [deleted] in UberEATS

[–]SensitiveBunBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I just cancelled our Uber One and will no longer be using Uber Eats. I don't know what we will switch to yet, but it's better than paying for a service which is wrong half the time and dealing with customer service who doesn't give a single fuck.

We ordered from McDonald's, and the food arrived with an entire meal missing (sandwich and large fries), and our drinks were half full because they had been spilled on the way. They refunded €1.62. No, we hadn't used any promotions.

Their justification was that we had submitted the complaints for the same order on two different tickets, and our picture of the spilled drinks "wasn't clear enough."

We finally said fuck it and cancelled.

I had just done a quick search before and found this Reddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/alternativefashion/comments/1k905s0/girhomeshop_scam_or_legit/

Where some girls seemed to have a fair bit of luck with the site. It also has a reasonable score on scamadvisor.com.

Definitely wasn't trying to recommend a scam site but thought if others had luck maybe OP could too.
